ARC Mini-Review: Dragon Rising

Dragon Rising (The Hidden 0.6)

by Jaime Rush

Blurb:

Clues left by her missing father lead Lyra to a gorgeous, mysterious Caido, a descendent of fallen angels. When she discovers that his brother is also missing, she's determined not to let the exasperating man shut her out.
The last thing Archer needs is an emotional Dragon at his side, especially one whose heat reaches beyond the icy walls he, and all Caidos, must erect for good reason. Working together? Smart. Falling in love? Foolish…and inescapable.

Review:

Dragon Rising is the second short introductory novella setting up the new series by Jaime Rush.  The first novella introduced us to this strange world that coexists along with ours, primarily in south Florida and the island off its coast where these magical entities makes their homes. As always Rush builds her characters and introduces us to the magic of her world a bit at a time.  We met the heroine in the previous story where her brother rediscovers his love during a quest to find their missing fathers. Unusually, Lyra’s story takes place simultaneously as her brother's and the ending for Dragon Rising wraps up the short story arc that the novellas shared.
Lyra is working to find her missing father and suspects there might have been more to his disappearance than everyone suspects.  Suspicion of his having an affair with another man’s mate and them running away together has made Lyra paranoid about finding out the truth before it’s too late. In an effort to solve the mystery, she enlists the help of a mysterious Caido named Archer, whose brother is also missing. The minute they are together both of them are faced with the intense attraction that unexpectedly flairs between them, but that attraction causes danger around every corner. Archer has issues on top of issues especially with his desire for Lyra, a desire he cannot act on.  When their investigation drags them into danger and both their lives are at risk the passion between them leads to a love that neither of them can deny and a destiny that they were meant to share.
Though a very short story, Dragon Rising is a good introductory novella to the new series.  The continued story arc of the two novellas that are prequels to what I think will be a great series leave me with an intense desire to get this story really started.  It’s masterfully written and full of twists and turns. Lyra and Archer’s story is passionate and though the hurdles they face are big ones, knowing that they are both strong enough to work together and overcome them leaves you with no doubt that they will have a long and happy life together.  I would have loved for Lyra and Archer to have a full length story, but all-in-all it is a great story.  I’m really looking forward to what’s next in the Hidden series and can’t wait to learn more about this magical world.

ARC Mini-Review: Hot Mess

Hot Mess (Hostile Operations Team #1.5)

by

Blurb:

English professor Dr. Georgeanne Hayes has a problem. Her star pupil, an Army sergeant who works in a Top Secret government program, is missing—and someone tried to push her in front of a train last night.
Sam “Knight Rider” McKnight is used to looking out for Georgie. When they were kids, she was just his best friend’s baby sister. But Georgie’s not a baby anymore and Sam is getting some very male—and very dirty—thoughts about the girl he knows he can never have.
When someone threatens Georgie’s life again, Sam will do anything necessary to keep her safe. Even if it means spending the next few days locked up in a remote house on Maryland’s Eastern Shore with her.
Sam might be used to denying himself what he wants, but he’s about to find out that being cooped up with Georgie will push him to the limit. And maybe beyond.

Review:

The newest installment of the HOT series, Hot Mess, is a fun short story to tide us over until the next full length novel. Being a relatively new reader of this author, I have been taking the series one story at a time, but I am really enjoying everything I’ve read so far.  Based in the shadowy world of dark military operations, HOT is full of sexy alpha men who live dangerous and adrenaline packed lives.  Getting to see each of them meet their match in a strong and passionate woman will be wonderful, and this short story where we meet one of the relatively new members of HOT was no exception. Another great story by Ms. Harris to be sure, though I definitely wish it had been longer!
Georgeanne finds herself in intense and dangerous circumstances and she’s completely out of her depth.  Her friendship and worries over a friend have turned the eyes of the wrong people her way.  But when her girlhood love, Sam, returns to her life, it throws her for even more of a loop. Determined to uncover the men after Georgie, Sam enlists the aid of the other members of HOT and they discover the danger to Georgie is even more complicated.  When their forced seclusion brings all the passion and desire they’ve been resisting to unbearable levels, there is no option for them but to explore the heat that is flaring between them.  Georgie has always held a special place in Sam’s heart and though he has resisted her all these years, he’s never forgotten the feel or taste of her and having her—fully—leaves him with no chance of keeping himself away from her. When the danger is over and their lives return to their separate worlds, can they both accept the inherent danger and fears that come along with Sam’s job as a HOT operative, or will they forgo their chance for an HEA?
Sam was one of those sexy alpha males that I find myself wanting to reach into the book and shake.   Yes, Georgie is his best friends little sister.  Yes, there is an age difference.  But damn man, when a woman tells you she wants you, loves you, and needs you, just trust her to know her own heart and mind! Eesh.  Only when he can finally overcome his hang-ups and admit that they are good together, can they begin to build a relationship.  Georgie is definitely a woman I can relate to.  She is strong and knows when she has met her match, and she’s known for years that Sam is the man she wants.  Though life forced her to move on many years before, seeing Sam again reminds her that the love and desire she’s always had for him never faded.   When she decides that she is no longer going to settle for him pushing her away and denying their attraction things heat up pretty fast.
Overall this was a very good story.  There was heat between the H/H from start to finish, action, mystery, and glimpses of future heroes for this series.  The underlying plot to the story was interesting, though it ended rather suddenly and was a bit anticlimactic for my tastes.  Maybe had it been a couple of chapters longer, that part of the story could have been more fleshed out.  The love story between Sam and Georgeanne was memorable, with his sweet, sexy, alpha nature butting against her stubborn and determined spine of steel at every turn. I cannot wait for what’s next for these HOT guys and to get to see where this new author will take me.  Congratulations Ms. Harris you have earned yourself a new dedicated fan. Just keep the wonderful stories coming down the line.

Review: Styxx

Styxx (Dark-Hunter #23)

by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Blurb:

Just when you thought doomsday was over...
Centuries ago Acheron saved the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge.
As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn’t always been on his brother’s side. They’ve spent more centuries going at each other’s throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he’s willing to trade his life and future for Acheron’s.
The Atlantean goddess of Wrath and Misery, Bethany was born to right wrongs. But it was never a task she relished. Until now. She owes Acheron a debt that she vows to repay, no matter what it takes. He will join their fellow gods in hell and nothing is going to stop her.
But things are never what they seem, and Acheron is no longer the last of his line. Styxx and Acheron must put aside their past and learn to trust each other or more will suffer.
Yet it’s hard to risk your own life for someone who once tried to take yours, even when it's your own twin, and when loyalties are skewed and no one can be trusted, not even yourself, how do you find a way back from the darkness that wants to consume the entire world? One that wants to start by devouring your very soul?

Review:

There truly are three sides to every story..and in this case the truth is sadder than fiction.  We have believed for the last five years that we knew the truth of all the horrors that Acheron endured at the hands of his family during his life as a human in ancient Atlantis.  But now we know that we never knew the half of it.  Ms. Kenyon has opened my eyes and reminded me why I try so hard in my life not jump to conclusions about anyone I meet and the lives I see them living.   Breaking my heart and bringing me to tears repeatedly, as I learned the truth, Styxx is the truth that we never knew we were missing in this series. Now that the truth is out we can all be reminded that just because we think we understand a character’s motivations, until we read their personal stories even the most detailed of stories can remain one-sided.  Thanks for blowing my mind Ms. Kenyon!
Styxx’s story begins when he and Acheron are little boys, living in ancient Greece.  The young prince of the Didymosian throne, everyone sees Styxx as the pampered spoiled son of the king, even his family, but the truth is much darker and dangerous.  As Styxx grows, dealing with his jealous shrew of a sister, the loss of the other half of himself, and the hate and suspicions of both his parents, he is suprisingly able to retain his humility and the truly gentle nature of his soul.  I won’t give away too many of the details about the sorrows and horrors of the short human life that Styxx led, but I will say that if you have read Acheron’s story it doesn’t even begin to show the terrors that these two boys really lived.  But amazingly, through all the disgusting things that were done to Styxx, he was able to find a woman to love and maintain the ability to share his true self with her despite it all.  But sadly that was just the beginning of the sadness he had to face.
Bethany, Styxx’s love, is not exactly who she leads him to believe, but when she falls in love with Styxx, despite all the lies she’s always believed about him she is willing to give it all up for him.  Teaching him to trust his heart and learning from him the power of a man with a pure heart, Bethany joins with Styxx against his enemies.   When they are separated, for over 11,000 years, it’s impossible not to feel destroyed for them.  But only with the help of the twin he long ago lost faith in, can Styxx bring back his Bethany and find the light of her love to counter the darkness of his past.
Styxx is one of those characters that we have been taught to hate from the beginning of the series.  We first met him in the third book of the series when he tried to kill Acheron and from then on we only ever see him through the eyes of his enemies.  But from the minute this story begins, we see a whole new side of Styxx.  Seeing the dark and disastrous past that shaped Styxx into the man he was, and learning the real reason for his actions made me feel almost worse for him than I did for Ach when we learned about his own sordid past. Deeply rooted fears and issues that I couldn’t even begin to come to terms with or understand, have earned Styxx my respect and love.  Don’t think I ever met a better written character and I can honestly say that  if I ever met a man with Styxx’s heart and ability to forgive, in the flesh, I would do everything in my power to claim him for myself.
Bethany is a pretty cool chick too.  Being a goddess with her very own intriguing back story and issues, Bethany comes into Styxx’s life during one of his darkest years.  Posing as a young human girl, she is just enjoying her solitude when Styxx arrives in her life and changes the course of their futures forever.  Their friendship quickly blossoms into a deep and abiding love, passion and companionship running side by side as they individually come to terms with their responsibilities and their dreams.  But when Bethany finally decides to commit to Styxx there is nothing that can keep them apart or destroy their love, not death and not 11,000 years apart.
I can honestly say I began this story as a major skeptic; usually I don’t like when a well established villain is made the hero of his own romance, but only Ms. Kenyon could so fabulously pull off something like this. The atrocities that Styxx endured as a child and a young man are so disgusting and disturbing that there were times I found myself having to put the book down and hug my family just to ground myself in my own reality.  Though the details were terrifying, the telling of this story is above reproach and beautifully written to tug your heartstrings and make you count your blessings that you never had to live their lives.  Styxx is the best novel I’ve read in ages and seeing the heart of a man that could so easily have become a psychopath, remain true and pure—to find love—shows us that even the most damaged and shattered of men can become whole again.  While the story of why Styxx and Acheron became enemies, and the eventual reconciliation of their relationship, was definitely a BIG portion of this story, it is patently obvious this was a story of love.  A love for the ages, one that bridges all gaps, and brings two wounded souls back together to share the ultimate love.  Seeing Beth and Styxx get their HEA is the most important lesson Kenyon could share with us. Styxx is easily the best story of the year and so far for me the best book of this decade.  I never thought Acheron could be topped, but Kenyon has done it.  Now I can only wonder…what more can she do to shatter our beliefs in this series and where can we possibly go from here?

Review: Return of the Warrior

Return of the Warrior (Brotherhood/MacAllister #7)

by Kinley MacGregor

 Blurb:

Fearless men, their allegiance is to each other, to the oppressed, and to the secret society known as the Brotherhood of the Sword -- and they must never surrender to the passionate yearnings of their noble hearts.
Fiercely devoted to her people and her land, Queen Adara refuses to let a power-mad usurper steal her crown. But the only way to protect what is hers is to seek out the man she married in childhood.
A proud, tormented warrior, Christian of Acre owes allegiance only to the mysterious Brotherhood -- and has no wish to be king over anyone but himself. Now a bold and beautiful stranger has appeared in his rooms, tempting him with an irresistible seduction and demanding he accompany her back to their kingdoms ... or, at the very least, provide her with an heir to her throne. Though he cannot abandon the brave regal lady to her enemies, Christian dares not give in to his traitorous body's desires. Yet how can he deny the passion that is rightfully his and the ecstasy that awaits him in Adara's kiss?

Review:

Kinley MacGregor, aka Sherrilyn Kenyon, is definitely one of my three favorite authors.  That being said I only recently discovered the greatness of this series.    The Brotherhood series has been a pleasant surprise and a great experience to immerse myself in the world of these great men and their secret society of crusaders.   The men of this society have been through hell and have banded together to make their lives bearable, but the denial of their basic nature, their need  for women to complete their lives, leads to some interesting life affirming changes being forced on them by those women.
Christian has made himself a promise to trust no one except the fellow members of his society, the men who went through hell with him and came out changed on the other side.  He has made a choice to never return to his childhood home, to never accept the crown that has been saved for him through all these years.   He is beyond surprised when he is confronted with a very beautiful and very naked woman in his room one night.   She says she’s his wife, but he knows he’s never married anyone and is ready to kick her out without hearing another word from her.  But then they are attacked and he has no choice but to get them both to safety.
Adara is a strong and fierce queen, one who has devoted her life to trying to make the lives of her people more bearable, but as a woman she has only one desire.  She wants her love, her husband, to come back to her and give her the family she wants.  Everyone has tried to convince her that he is dead, but she knows in her heart that he is still alive, and she is determined to bring him back to both her personally and to the crown he is destined to wear and lead their people.  But the man she meets isn’t the fair and sweet boy she remembers from her wedding, instead and he is a dark and changed man, and though she sees glimpses of her love in him, dealing with those changes is difficult for her.
Betrayals and truths are uncovered as they work together to keep themselves safe and to find their way home.  As they are thrown into such tight quarters during their travels, they begin to relearn each other and the passion that flairs is sexy as hell.   Adara’s sensuality is irresistible to Christian and she is determined to use everything at her disposable to make sure that she gets what she wants: Christian to come back to her and stay with her for the rest of their lives.  Christian begins to see that they are meant to be, and though they have been torn apart by others and their manipulations, they can overcome and defeat the naysayers and find their love together.
Return of the Warrior was a great addition to this series.  Though the series is connected don’t feel you need to read the entire series to enjoy the story, as they are definitely written to stand alone and there is more than enough information and background to bring you up to date. Christian and Adara’s story is wonderful and sensual as well as being exciting and full of conspiracies that were made to pull them apart, but instead in the end bring them together.  I loved this book and can’t wait to read the series finale.  I’ve waited for that one from the beginning and will finally be able to find out who is made to be Lochlan’s Mate.

ARC Review: Midnight Lies

Midnight Lies (Wildefire #2)

by  (Goodreads Author)

Blurb:

IT’S ALWAYS HOTTER AT MIDNIGHT.
The winds of fate have blown cruelly on a family that once had it all: money, power, prestige. The lives of three beautiful daughters were forever changed when, on a sultry night in Midnight, Alabama, a murder-suicide shattered the Wilde family. The girls grew up to live separate lives but now have returned home, each to face a danger no one can see coming.
Former homecoming queen Samantha surprised everyone by going into law enforcement, but beneath her tough façade lies a wary heart. The tragedy that struck her family is an ever-present reminder that nothing is ever as it seems. When the man she loves, Quinn Braddock, a doctor and Iraq war veteran, is accused of murder, Samantha assumes the worst. Brokenhearted, her confidence shattered, she returns to Midnight. Though exonerated, Quinn still feels the sting of Samantha’s doubt, but he can’t forget his feelings for her and follows her. Soon after his arrival, a shocking murder terrifies the town, and once again, Quinn is under suspicion. This time, Samantha will not turn her back on the man she loves—even if it means walking into a killer’s trap.
Review:
Returning to Midnight, AL we find ourselves once again immersed in the amazing world of a small-town in the south and the action filled lives of the Wilde triplets. Grace shows the quintessential small town at its seediest and most endearing.  We had gotten little hints of this story in the first novel in the series, but finding out all the drama that Sam and Quinn will have to overcome shows that the depths of sadistic predators will go to can come between the greatest of loves, if you aren't willing to fight for every moment of happiness.  Midnight Lies is full of action, danger, deceit, and the everlasting love that can be found in even the darkest of times.
Sam and Quinn are in the first blush of their relationship, just learning each other and trying to decide where the future may take them.  Just as Sam is coming to terms with that fact that she loves this man and wants more from him than he can give, his ex-wife is brutally murdered and Quinn is the only suspect.  Hounded by the police, Quinn’s only consolation is that he is sure Sam believes in his innocence.  Unfortunately, when faced with the suspicions of Quinn being a murderer, her faith is shaken—temporarily—because she’s never really dealt with the emotions surrounding the deaths of her parents eighteen years earlier. Sadly Quinn sees this as the ultimate betrayal and pulls away from Sam, deciding that if she can’t trust him implicitly they aren't meant to be together.
When Quinn learns all that Sam did to help him during his darkest hour, he realizes just how badly he has treated her and resolves to track her down and beg her forgiveness.  Traveling to Sam’s hometown, Quinn apologizes, however her cold reaction to him shows Quinn that he has his work cut out for him if he wants to have a chance to have Sam in his life again.  But as they both work through their issues and try to come to term with their relationship, the murder of a local woman leaves suspicions hanging over their heads again.  Working together to track down the killer and prove once and for all that Quinn’s innocent, they have to try to overcome all their fears and hang-ups and for once trust in each other and their own hearts.
What can I say about these two? Well firstly I could say that both of them could have used a kick in the pants more than once.  Sam has her fair share of hang-ups and the truth of her past has shaken her and her family to the core. She has such a strong façade that she shows to the  world, but inside she is still that shattered little girl, whose trust in the men in her life has left her unable to trust in her heart.  She is strong willed certainly, but her inner vulnerabilities made her too easily cracked until she found her true core of steel. Quinn is the string silent type, one who has always held his emotions deep inside, never letting anything crack his hard exterior.  That deep set control serves him well in most cases, but dealing with the love that is building inside him for Sam leaves him struggling to face the option of giving up that control or pushing Sam away.
With so much going on in this story—murders, investigations, drama and repeated emotional upheavals—one might suspect that Sam and Quinn are too busy to find the time to rekindle their passions, but I can say with all happiness that they found a way. The pull between these two is too much to handle, heat flares each minute they are in contact and they don’t put up much of a fight to try to resist it. Whether it was passion filled by lust, anger or the love that they both finally admit to feeling, they come together in blazing intensity.  I was so thrilled to finally see together on the same page, at the same time, with no more obstacles in their way.
Midnight Lies, is one of my favorite contemporary novels of the summer. With all the action, suspense, passion and love that I’ve come to expect from this author, book two in the Wildefire series will blow your mind and push all your emotional buttons.  I was laughing, crying, and lusting throughout this whole book. Sam and Quinn are both wounded souls who decide finally that working together to get over all the issues that are pulling them apart is the only way they can ever be happy.  Seeing two such broken people beat the odds and be able to make their lives together, gives me the hope that we can all find our perfect mate and the love they found. Can’t wait to find out more about Sabrina, the final single triplet, and I suspect that her issues run even deeper than her sisters' and the man who tackles them will need to be strong and dedicated. Keep the greatness coming Ella.

ARC Review: Dangerous

Dangerous

by Jax, Jacquelyn Frank (Goodreads Author)

Blurb:

A body that won't quit
Clothes that are barely there
Eyes that openly invite him to take what he wants
Devon Candler is nothing like the helpless, vulnerable woman Liam expected when he agreed to provide security for her secluded Catskill Mountain estate. Yet her life is at risk. Her enemies monsters. Her secrets devastating.
Liam Nash is a trained killer who takes no prisoners, fears no man. But to him this woman is seductively, devastatingly. . .
Dangerous.

Review:

Being only the second novel written under the pseudonym Jax, Dangerous was one of those novels that could leave you a bit confused if you weren't easily adaptable to new rendition of the classic genre motifs.  I thoroughly liked the first book by Jax and would have liked a continuation of that series but this book on its own was very Frank,  There was certainly some new and interesting world building and intriguing new characters to get to know. I was in no way disappointed and look forward to whatever new quirky books come down the line from this author.
Set in a strange alternate future, where scientific experiments have gone wrong creating a new race of humans, basically a vampiric race with some very interesting new special skills. Devon is in need of protection from this new terrifyingly strong race of man and she turns to the one man she knows can do the job.  Liam Nash is the only human in the entire world who figured out the Achilles heel of these vampires.  Devon’s trying to make the world a better place and having Liam's protection is the one way she knows to get her plan to work.  But then Liam explodes into her life and she begins to understand that living just for her dreams of making the world a better place has left a whole in her life that only he can fill.
Liam is blown away when he finally meets Devon Chandler in person. He takes this job expecting a straight-forward protective detail, but he never imagined just how complicated it could possibly get. Her sexuality and intelligence blow his mind and leave him floundering to understand the effect this woman has on him.  He’d always been fully controlled and untouchable to the women he encounters. When things get even more complicated between Devon and Liam, his world is completely turned upside down and he can’t decide if meeting Devon was the beginning of the end or the best thing that ever happened to him.
The heat between Devon and Liam was palpable from the second she enters his life and only becomes more intense as time goes on. When they are together you can feel the emotions behind the passion developing as they find themselves faced repeatedly with the possibility of their deaths. The chance that they could lose each other at any moment forces a more immediate development of their love, but you can see that it will be a deep and lifelong love.  Devon is an intensely sensual character, with deep passions for the man in her life and the goals she has for herself and the world. Liam is a bit of an enigma, deeply passionate but fully controlled.  He is the perfect example of the saying “still waters run deep”.  When Devon brings that passion out and embraces it fully, Liam finds that there is no stopping it or slowing the progression of his feelings.
Though the world building was a bit spotty, lacking a bit of the explanations I’d come to expect from Frank, the descriptions of the new species and how everything came about gave us enough information that we aren't left completely confused. It was certainly a unique take on the vampire myth and one that I am looking forward to learning more about (hopefully). There was also the intriguing point of the developments and changes of the bit cities that are the most popular in the US. Having those cities overrun by the “vampire” populations and leaving the human population to begin life over elsewhere was pretty cool for my country girl mind to witness. There was an amazing amount of action and physical danger as well, as Devon and Liam are repeatedly attacked and come face to face with vampires, killer assassins and the uncovering of scary secrets.
With an intriguing new take on an old myth, intensely sensual characters and the sexiest connection between two people that can be imagined, Dangerous is a wonderful read, with action, drama and the embrace of mortality to keep things from being too simple.  The amazing connection between Devon and Liam is almost too intense to read, but you are unable to put it down for a single second.  The new world you find yourself immersed in is one that could be reality so easily. Jacquelyn Frank is one of my go to author and I have never read one of her novels I didn’t like, but her new voice as Jax is one that I am having mixed feelings about.  I like the characters and the overall storylines, but I am not developing as deep a connection as I would have expected.  I’m going to have to say the jury is out on this new author’s voice.  Book three will be a deciding factor for me for sure.

ARC Review: The Knight's Temptress

The Knight's Temptress (Lairds of the Loch #2)

by

Blurb:

When Lady Lachina "Lina" MacFarlan of Tùr Meiloach and her new sister-in-law, Elizabeth, are captured by seditious villains who have seized the royal burgh, harbor, and castle of Dumbarton, the two young women unknowingly throw a hitch into the plans of Sir Ian Colquhoun, the daredevil knight of the realm who is on his own secret mission to recapture Dumbarton for the King of Scots.
Instead of securing Dumbaton, Ian must first rescue the women and return them to Tùr Meiloach. Their journey will be perilous—especially because Ian has long admired the lovely Lady Lachina, and for the first time she seems to show signs of returning his attentions. But for Ian duty must come before desire. The fate of the King of Scots and Lina's own father rests in his hands. He cannot afford to be tempted by anything—even the promise of Lina's love

Review:

Knight’s Temptress is the continuing story of the MacFarlan family, the mysterious, suspected magical, group that has made their home in an impenetrable and magically protected keep deep in the Scottish highlands.  It is the second in the Lairds of the Loch series and pretty much picks up where book one ended. Though I thoroughly enjoyed book one in the series, sadlyKnight’s Temptress did not live up to the first book or my hopes for the series.  I will definitely read book three, but I hope to have a bit more in that book to restore my faith in this author.
The story begins with the capture of Lina and Lizzie, by the dastardly son of the usurper of the MacFarlan clan.  They are taken and kept captive at the recently overthrown Dumbarton castle, hoping that their families will soon bring them home, but in the meantime just trying to maintain their sanity.  While the girls are in captivity, Ian is on his own mission, one for the king, but knowing that Lina is in danger he forsakes his duty, somewhat recklessly, just to ensure her safety.   A bit of planning ensues on both sides, and finally Ian is able to smuggle the women out of the castle. But when they make it safely home, things get a bit complicated for poor Lina and ultimately lead Ian to offer for her hand.  Shortly after they are married and then separated again as Ian goes to continue his mission to recover Dumbarton castle for the king. Once the battle is over and the dust has settled, Ian and Lina must come to terms with their personalities and their relationship to find their HEA.
I enjoyed reading about both Ian and Lina as they were very well written and loveable characters. Lina was intelligent, well-spoken, and crafty when needed. She is also loyal and protective of her family and will do whatever it takes to keep them safe, even if it puts a wedge between her and Ian.  Ian is also a great hero.  He is extremely honorable, strong of character, and loyal to his friends and beliefs.  It was sweet to see him begin to develop feelings for Lina, but emotion and time for relationship building was where things began to fall apart for me.
While there was a lot of action and individual problems for both Ian and Lina to deal with, the truth is there just didn’t seem to be enough time they were together for them to build a meaningful relationship.  They were only in the same town for about 30% of the booth (estimated) for goodness sake. While their time together was interesting, the emotions seem to be a bit shallow to me.  I am all for love at first sight, but not seeing them get to spend time together and learn about each other made the ultimate declarations of love seem a bit far-fetched. Though I could obviously see how they could have developed feelings that went deeper it would have taken more time than they are given./ the love scenes were also a bit lackluster at points and i wasn't thrilled by them.
Overall, there was a lot to the overall series plot arc in this story, but the focus on the relationship between Ian and Lina was lacking for me.   It was awesome to get to see more of Mag and Dree (the H/H from book one) and to get more hints about Muriella and what her story might entail.  Getting to experience Ian’s military mind and his challenges and struggles to aid King Jaime was pretty interesting too. If there had been more time spent between Ian and Lina—though the time they spent together in bed was certainly fun to read—the story would have been a hit for me.  I look forward to the next in the series and hope for a return of relationship building like there was in book one.
