The finale of Prince Charlie’s Angels has finally found love in this story of drama, heartbreak, tragedy and ultimate happiness. This series grabbed my attention based on the storyline of sisterhood and female rebellion in a time that many think females did nothing but hide behind their men. I have enjoyed the series immensely though there were moments where the stories lagged and I felt the story could have glossed over some of the generalities. This story overlaps a lot with the second book in the series with the Battle of Culloden and the aftermath at the beginning and then carrying on to the fleeing of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the ultimate ending of the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland. Fiona Macbean has been a dedicate Jacobite since before she fully understood the true meaning of the definition, and for many years she has served as the Prince’s personal and secret messenger delivery missives between the Prince and his followers all over Scotland. In the process of carrying out her duties, she has met many different men, but from the first moment she meets Brogan Grant she is drawn to him like none other. Brogan is dedicated to the Jacobite cause despite all that oppose his choices and the enemies he faces, but the lass that he meets in the dark and later again spying after the battle arouses his suspicions along with his intrigue. Teaming up with the Prince’s personal messenger in order to find the monarch makes sense, and despite his misgivings he agrees to work with her, but soon their partnership leads them down paths neither of them every imagined. When their lives and hearts are entwined and the safety of Scotland is in their hands the risk to their love and their lives is almost too much for their budding love, but they are both too stubborn to truly ever give up. I enjoyed finally getting to know Fiona as we have gotten little glimpses of her in past stories and heard about her from her friends, but she has always remained very mysterious and shadowy. In reality she is braver than any man around her, dedicating her life to a mission that would put her into the crosshairs of some of the most dangerous men in history and forfeiting not just her life but putting her through the worst hell imaginable for a woman if ever captured. She was sly, clever, and at turns sweet and loving to her family and friends and when she claimed their traveling party as brothers she showed them the same feelings. The loved she shared with her man was enough to turn the tide of battle once or twice and she was certainly brave enough to fight back when most other women would have given in long before. Brogan was a gentle giant of a man, offering his whole body and soul to the cause, until Fiona solely wormed her way into his heart and stole his heart too. He was strong, astute, valiant, and willing to let the woman he loved be who she needed to be to have her happiness instead of enforcing his own beliefs on her and forcing her to give up her mission or dreams. I loved seeing him in action fighting battles, outthinking the enemy –and Fiona once or twice—and even watching him build a lasting brotherhood with his men showed how superior a leader of men he was. The attraction between Fiona and Brogan was sweet to watch build as they battled with one another and sparred verbally again and again, but once their passions became something deeper the love that developed was sweet and interesting to watch. I am sad to see the ending of this series, but it was definitely entertaining to read from beginning to end and I am looking forward to whatever Ms. Knight releases next. Long Live Scotland! ;)
