Review: Repressed (Deadly Secrets #1)

Repressed (Deadly Secrets #1)

by Elisabeth Naughton

Blurb:
Hidden Falls is exactly as Samantha Parker left it—small, insular, and prone to gossip. Eighteen years have passed since she witnessed her brother’s murder, but she’s still the talk of the town. Until a handsome child psychologist with haunting memories of his own arrives.
Dr. Ethan McClane isn’t exactly a newcomer. If it weren’t for his latest case, he’d never set foot back in Hidden Falls. Thankfully, no one seems to recognize him as the troubled teen from years past. Not even Sam, the delightfully sharp and sexy high school chemistry teacher he can’t stop thinking about.
When Sam and Ethan work together to help one of her students, sparks ignite. But Sam’s hazy memories of a long-ago night concern Ethan, and unlocking the repressed images reveals a dark connection between them. As the horrors of the past finally come to light, their relationship isn’t the only thing in danger. A killer will strike again to keep an ugly secret hidden, and this time no one will be safe.

Review:
Elisabeth Naughton is one of my favorite paranormal authors, but when she decided to branch out into romantic suspense I didn’t hesitate to jump at the chance to read her new venture.  The first story in her new series, Repressed, takes us back to the childhood traumas of two individuals whose past was irrevocably intertwined one fateful night thought neither ever knew it. While this story was extremely emotional and led the reader through the pitfalls of childhood trauma relived, the romance that develops between Sam and Ethan was both sweet and sensual.  I enjoyed seeing Sam solve the mystery of her past and embrace her inner core of strength as she fights for what she really wanted, even as Ethan had to come to terms with his fears in order to keep the woman he loves safe and in his life, despite his past.  Sam isn’t exactly running from her past, but she has spent many years suppressing the truth she witnessed, but when strange things start happening around her it becomes harder and harder to deny that she might have truly witnessed something all those years ago—and might be in the middle of something dangerous once again.  I liked Sam a lot, even at times when she was trying deny her own instincts, mainly when she was fighting so hard for those she loved; in the end she finds her strength and is able to forgive the past once she understands the full depravity of what went on around her and the truth of that long ago night.  Ethan was a favorite from the very beginning, facing his childhood fears and fighting for the little guy, while also chasing after a woman that intrigues him, but as we get to know him more and more we see that sometimes youthful indiscretions go deeper than we ever realized. I loved Ethan’s character because he was just so human in a way that a lot characters aren’t.  He is of course very sexy and beyond a match for Sam’s sensuality once it peeks through the clouds she hides it behind.  They are so obviously a perfect match for one another.  I enjoyed this first-in-a-series very much and cannot wait to see what comes next.  Another masterful series is coming obviously.

Review: Sentinel of Darkness (Darkness #8)

Sentinel of Darkness (Darkness #8)

by Katie Reus

Blurb:
She thought she’d put her past behind her…
Local artist Keva might be human, but she knows about the things that go bump in the night. Years ago, a dragon shifter saved her from certain death. Ever since, she’s lived in his clan’s territory and put her life back together. But the feeling of security is only an illusion, because her past has come back to haunt her. A past with claws and fangs, demanding blood.
He’ll do whatever it takes to defend his mate…
Dagen has finally met his mate—except he insults her the first time they meet. He’s not too proud to grovel to get back into her good graces. But when a threat from her past emerges, he realizes that he’ll do anything to keep her safe. Even if it means dying—or losing her forever.

Review:
I love a good story about a woman taking back her independence and sensuality after abuse and Katie Reus always manages to tackle that theme with magical skill and add in the spice and individuality that makes her story better than anyone else's.  If you are a longtime fan of the series you will recognize most of the supporting characters in Keva and Dagen’s tale, even if you might not recognize them right off the bat.  I enjoyed every single second of this story and getting to see both of these lovers find their footing together and would have loved it even more had this story been twice as long, to be honest.  Keva was a woman that has worked hard to get over the trauma in her past, even if she knows she still has a few issues to work through, and she knows that she won’t ever again let a man take advantage of her.  She tugged at my heartstrings in a lot of ways but the best part was seeing Dagen make a fool of himself as he tried to make her fall in love with him.  Dagen is a bit of a typical dragon in that his arrogance knows no bounds, but he sees immediately he has made a serious mistake when he realizes he has alienated his mate with an unintended insult.  Breaking through her walls and making her see that he is the man for her makes him more human and shows us that he can be a tender and loving mate for her.  I LOVED seeing Dagen brought low as any man should be as he falls in love, before Keva picks him back up and shows him the man he is truly meant to be. The danger and suspense in this novel carried some weight for such a short novel, but I liked that, even as I wished the length of the story had been a bit extended. This series continues to amaze me in that Katie always seems to find a way to keep it original while maintaining the magic and heart of the very first story that stole my heart.  I cannot wait to see where this series goes next. Keep the magic and of course the DRAGONS coming, Katie!

ARC Review: A Rancher's Bride (Heart Falls #4)

A Rancher's Bride (Heart Falls #4)

Blurb:

Having a significant other on his arm isn’t merely a good idea, it’s a necessity. Doesn't matter that he’s currently single—there’s a logical solution. Kelli is easy company, a vital part of ranch operations, and willing to sing Silver Stone’s praises all day long. She’ll be perfect.
Kelli James has kept a lot of secrets over the eight years since she boldly walked onto the ranch. Her biggest challenge, though, has been hiding her crush on the sexiest cowboy she’s ever laid eyes on. That he signed her up to play the part of the perfect rancher’s bride-to-be wasn’t it…

Review:
Wow, now that is one way to take a business function and turn it into the opportunity of a lifetime!
The Hearts Falls series continues with a friends-to-lovers story that will warm the heart while giving you that little jump in the belly that makes any Vivian Arend story so enchanting.  There is just that little bit of Cinderella vibe in this amazing story of a woman that has finally decided to embrace the chance to take her feelings for the man of her dreams to the next level.  For long-time readers of the series we have watched anxiously as the Silver Stone ranch has slowly dug herself out of the hole, with her owners each working in their own way to bring her back into the black, and the time has come for Luke to do his part.  This story is one that I have anticipated as long time as we have watched Luke struggle through breaking off his engagement and trying to find his footing as well as seeing Kelli’s unrequited love for him.  While his brothers and her friends have found love, they have remained friends, circling one another but neither seeing the other, but the time has come for that to change.  While I am sad to see that Dustin will have to wait a while for his story, I know that there will be more stories set in this world and revolving around this family as well as their extended family, the Whiskey Creek Colemans, which I am SUPER excited about and I know that will make 2019 an exciting year.
Luke Stone has gotten an amazing opportunity for the ranch, but it comes with a pretty big catch—he has to convince the ever frustrating Kelli to pose as his fiancĂ©e for a week.   When he makes the decision not to tell her that part of the deal until the last minute, he never imagines just how drastically she will turn the tables on him.   Kelli James has been just a little bit in love with Luke since the first moment she laid eyes on him, but now that they are both grown and free she is determined to take this chance to have him in her bed, and isn’t above a bit of extorrtion to get what she wants.  Putting all her cards on the table, Kelli opens Luke’s eyes to the passion they could share and soon he is unable to resist the woman that he has overlooked for so many years.   As the week passes and they get closer and closer, their passions burning hotter, Kelli and Luke also come to understand that their feelings for one another might just be deeper than either ever understood.  When they return home, Luke is unwilling to given up their new connection, but can Kelli come to terms with dating the boss and can they both come to terms with the fact that their lives may never go back to the way there were when a life altering truth from Kelli’s past comes to light?
Luke is HOTT, let’s just get that part out there first.  A sexy as hell cowboy in Levis and boots, with that little bit of caveman buried under the cowboy charm makes him beyond irresistible to just about any woman.  But beyond that he is smart, savvy and supportive to those he loves which makes him the perfect guy in my opinion.  He, of course, makes boneheaded mistakes, like all men, but unlike many, he learns from his mistakes and is quick to make corrections when he sees his course is veering too far into dangerous territory.  I loved seeing the way he helps Kelli to blossom once he finally open his eyes to the woman she has been hiding behind her simple denim and boots, but he also respects that she is who she is and doesn’t need to change to be loved.  I enjoyed seeing him working and when he gave his full attention to showing Kelli how she affected him I had to remove a few layers of my winter clothes to keep from overheating! Kelli was the kind of young woman that I can see growing into a truly strong matriarch and business owner, since she is already such a strong woman for one so young.  She has had a rough life already, but it has made her unbreakable, tempered steel at its finest. It was fun to watch her come out of her shell and find out that she is more than just a ranch hand and could contribute more to the ranch that just doing chores and training horses.  She was a bit quick here and there to try to protect herself from hurt by pushing others away, but I loved how playful and sweet she could be when she let down her walls.  It was also amazing to see how logical and levelheaded she was when she finally came to terms with what she wanted and that she could actually get it, if she just let herself reach for it.
Friends-to-lovers is sometimes a tricky trope to pull off, but as always Arend finds a way to pull it off with aplomb.  Kelli and Luke burn up the sheets of course, no doubt about it, but just as hot as they burn there is a sweetness and emotional connection between these two that brings the reader into the private world and allows us to share in their love. I enjoyed every single moment of this story and cannot wait to return to their world through the next series.  Kelli was a tiny powerhouse of passions, with a mouth to rival the raunchiest cowboy and a heart big as the Canadian wilderness.  She might not have always known where she belonged in the world but once she found her place, and the man that made that place into Home, she was determined to do whatever it took to keep it safe and sound.  Luke was just as determined to help his family make their ranch back into a success, but he never imagined that one week would change his life in so many ways, including showing him that Kelli was the woman for him, even if he’d never truly seen her before then.  He was the type of man that would give his whole heart to the woman that steals it and give his all to give her the home she never had and the future that they could build together. I loved seeing Kelli and Luke circle one another until they finally came together and found their way into each other’s arms.  The passion and heat between them left me reaching for ice water more than once and I am more than ready to go back and reread this one just for some of the highlights (*wink wink*, *nudge nudge*).  I am dying to see where Vivian takes us with the new spin in the series, with the Colemans of Hearts Falls beginning with The Cowgirl's Forever Love, which I believe will be between Lisa and Josiah and I can already tell will be full of sparks.  If you are looking for a story between two people that will show you the great passion to be found in the world and the fun that can come between two stubborn people when they find it, you can never go wrong with an Arend novel.  Another amazing tale of love and emotion, Vivian, and I cannot wait for what’s next.

ARC Mini-Review: Bark! The Herald Angels Sing (The Dogfather #7)

Bark! The Herald Angels Sing (The Dogfather #7)

by Roxanne St. Claire

Blurb:
With Christmas and a family wedding fast approaching, there’s happy chaos in the air at Waterford Farm. However, not everyone in the Kilcannon clan is caught up in the magic of the moment. Matriarch, octogenarian, and beloved blogger Gramma Finnie hears the clock of her long life ticking far too fast, while her great-granddaughter, teenager Pru, feels squeezed out of planning her mother’s nuptials.
But when this unlikely duo is tasked with the project of producing the “Somethings” for the wedding – and only have Christmas Eve to get the job done – Gramma Finnie and Pru have a purpose and a plan. They set off to find the perfect old, new, borrowed, and blue treasures, but it doesn’t take long for things to spin out of control faster than Gramma’s Toyota in a snowstorm. Detoured by a stray border collie, thwarted by nature and an elf parade, and trapped by a rifle-toting mountain man, it will take more than the power of the Kilcannon clan to save these two from a Christmas catastrophe. It will take the luck of the Irish, a love story from long ago, and a whole lot of help from the angels to make this holiday merry and bright.

Review:
So while many are used to seeing reviews here that talk about all the heat and passion that are found in romance novels, this sweet and loving holiday Epilogue to a series which certainly followed that typical pattern was none of those things—but I didn’t miss it at all. This long-running series has led to six loving relationships, including the parents of the lead heroine in this story, and we get to see all them coming together in a family semi-crisis as the two ladies that have pulled them together for years are at loose ends. Pru is dealing with a lot as her family comes together as not only Christmas but her parents’ wedding fast approaches, and she is feeling a little bit lost in her role in the family.  When she finally shares those feelings with her favorite lady in the family, her great-grandmother, family matriarch Finola “Finnie” Kilcannon, Finnie shares that she is having her own holiday doldrums.  Together they decide that a challenge for them both is what is needed to get them back in the holiday spirit.  While Finnie and Pru take their long overdue adventure Finnie shares with her great-granddaughter –and the reader—the story of how the Kilcannon clan began with the love she shared for so many years with her Seamus. When things quickly go awry however, Finnie and Pru must come together, along with their family, a new friend, and an amazing new dog the meet along the way to bring them safely back into bosom of their loving family.  This story is full of the love, sweetness, and family togetherness that embodies the spirit of the holidays, no matter what name you give them this time of year.  I loved the little bits of drama, danger, and love that we got to see and of course getting to see both Pru and Finnie find that missing spark was the best way to get back that Holiday cheer.  I am sad to see this series end, but am looking forward to the spinoff we can expect based on the cousins of the Kilcannon clan and getting to see these couples and their amazing family again through those tales.  Roxanne as always amazes me with her abilities to pull heartstrings, bring tears to my eyes, and still make me laugh and the most inappropriate moments (note to readers—do not try to sneak in reading this during a business meeting).  Another holiday masterpiece!

ARC Review: Seduced by a Scot (Highland Grooms #6)

Seduced by a Scot (Highland Grooms #6)

by  Julia London

Blurb:
There’s no matchmaking an unruly heart
When a prominent Scottish family faces a major scandal weeks before their daughter’s wedding, they turn in desperation to the enigmatic fixer for the aristocracy, Nichol Bain. Remarkably skilled at making high-profile problems go away, Nichol understands the issue immediately. The family’s raven-haired ward, Maura Darby, has caught the wandering eye—and rather untoward advances—of the groom.
Nichol assuredly escorts Maura toward his proposed solution: an aging bachelor for her to marry. But rebellious Maura has no interest in marrying a stranger, especially when her handsome traveling companion has captivated her so completely. Thankfully, Nichol loves a challenge, but traveling with the bold and brash Maura has him viewing her as far more than somebody’s problem. Which raises a much bigger issue—how can he possibly elude disaster when the heart of the problem is his own?

Review:
While I freely admit that I was not able to immediately pinpoint Nichol’s previous appearance in and connections to this series, I enjoyed the story from the beginning.  There were lots of twists and turns, plenty of amazing characters, and some very sexy moments along the way to keep this story from being boring.  Julia London has a way with all her writing that allows the reader to be sucked in to the story, and I enjoyed this story, though not nearly as much I did others in the series.  A woman finally finding her voice in a world ruled by men and a man finally coming to understand that the love of good woman can change a man’s life forever—what could make for a better match? I have really enjoyed this series and watching it developed, as each of the couples came together and found love, sometimes in the most unlikely of places. I am looking forward to whatever comes next, either in this series or if it is over then in whatever series comes next.
Nichol Bain is what we would now call a fixer—a man that spends his life saving the aristocracy from themselves when they can pay him, but never settling down or keeping anything for himself.  His newest assignment should have been an easy one, with a quick and simple solution, except for one little problem—Maura Darby.  The first woman to truly stir his passion and pull him from his shell, but he can’t keep her for himself when his entire reputation depends on him foisting her into a marriage she doesn’t want.  Maura is tired of being pushed into one or another unwanted and untenable situation where she has no say in her life, and she is determined to take back control of her life, starting with her passions of you very sexy man that is slowly worming his way into her heart.  In the end are they too different to make a life together or can they find a compromise that will allow the both to get everything they ever needed from their life?
I loved getting to know Maura and have no doubt that had I met her in person I would have made her a best friend immediately.  Once she decided that she was done being timid and hiding in the shadows, her bravery and mischievousness made her a perfect foil for Nichol’s steady and serious nature.  Her ability to think on her feet and willingness to do whatever it takes in times of fear or danger show her to be a truly intrepid heroine.  It was amazing to see her coming out of her shell, determining that she will  stand up for herself even against Nichol, and find a way to get herself out from under the thumb of those that have always keep her light from shining through.  Nichol spent the majority of the story exasperated and confused as Maura ties him into notes again and again.  Nichol was also dealing with very intense feelings from his past and having to come to terms with some hard truths about himself, but I think in doing so it made it easier for him to trust in his feelings for Maura.  In the end Nichol broke my heart again and again, watching him fall in love and find himself almost as much as Maura was, making this truly a story of self-discovery for two perfectly matched individuals that were badly in need of one another.
Seduced by a Scot is an amazing story, though I honestly cannot place which of the characters was truly the one seducing the other, but I was definitely seduced by the story itself and will enjoy reading more than once.  Maura and Nichol were interesting characters on a fun adventure together with twists and turns that led them right into one another’s arms and I loved experiencing it along with them. Nichol is a sexy Scot with a penchant for solving problems for those that should know better than to get themselves into them in the first place; he is sensual and also has an amazing ability to keep a woman on her toes and steal her heart.  Maura is a sweet girl who finally decides that enjoying her life and taking control of it is more important than keeping those around her happy.  Once she decides to stop hiding herself, Maura becomes a fitting counterpart for Nichol Bain and together they can overcome anything in their path.  The passion between them, even when they are arguing, is palpable and enough to make readers wonder is Nichol will be able to resist the innocent Maura. I also loved the epilogue to this story, where previous characters were brought back and we get to see how everything is all connected in the later years for Nichol and Maura.  If this is the end of the series I will be sad to see it end, but I know that something new will be coming to keep me interested and thrilled in the future as Julia London is amazing and I am a huge fan. I cannot wait for whatever comes next either way, Julia!
