Review: Slow Burn (Colorado High Country #2)

Slow Burn (Colorado High Country #2)

by Pamela Clare

Blurb:
Victoria Woodley is done with men. Fresh off a dating nightmare, she flies from her home in Chicago to Scarlet Springs to take part in her best friend’s wedding. Who picks her up at the airport? Eric Hawke. Of course. She made a fool of herself over him last time she was here. He’s cocky, charming, and sexy as sin. But the fact that she’s attracted to him is all the proof she needs that he’s bad news. She would ignore him if she could. But he’s the best man, and she’s the maid of honor. She can’t just tell him to jump in a lake—especially not when her lips are locked with his.
Eric isn’t looking for a relationship. Between running the firehouse and volunteering for the county’s search and rescue team, he has enough on his plate. He doesn’t need to get tangled up with a woman from the big city, especially one whose idea of roughing it is going without designer coffee. Yet from the moment he looks into Victoria’s big brown eyes, the attraction he feels is too strong to deny. Faster than he can imagine, the spark of desire that has smoldered between them since the first day they met will flare into full-blown passion.
But can Eric convince Victoria to set aside her doubts and trust him with her heart before their time together runs out?

Review:
As always when Ms. Clare begins a story there is the expectation that the story will end happily ever after and we will enjoy drama, sweetness, and sensuality as her characters take their journey to that HEA.  There is no denying that some of us were wary when she began her new series about a small town in Colorado, where the men are alpha, dangerous and sexy while the women are smart, sassy and sensually amazing.  Eric’s story has been tugging on our hearts and imaginations since the first book in the series and I was thrilled not to have to wait very long for it.  Eric is the kind of hero that sneaks up on us; he seems like such a brave and cocky guy that there’s no way he can be deep enough to cause a woman to fall madly in love with anything but his sexy body.  But getting to know Eric I have decided that while he is definitely arrogant he is also sweet, loving, and brave—and in no way could you call him shallow or selfish.  Victoria was the kind of woman that we all need to have in our lives to be our conscience and our guiding light when we aren’t sure about ourselves.  She is a true friend and is willing to go toe to toe with any man in order to get what she wants out of life.  Seeing these two find a way to overcome their differences and find a place in each other’s lives reminds us all that the way we are living our lives, though possibly fulfilling, is not always the best way to live.  Eric and Victoria came together in an intense and scarily fast relationship that quickly developed past the sexy fling they both thought they would get.  The passion between them was off the charts from the very beginning and as that heat mellowed into a deep love, the warmth they continued to share let the readers enjoy their love even more.  Ms. Clare is definitely one of the best romance authors around, IMO, and I can guarantee, even if you have never read any of her other work, giving her Colorado High Country series a chance will be a decision you won’t come to regret.  I cannot wait to see where the story goes next and what wonderful characters we’ll meet next.

Review:
This series has been surprisingly interesting and well written for a set of short-ish novellas all about sexy dragon shifters and their mates.  I admit I have a bit of a weakness for Dragons, with several series currently on my plate, but Ms. Lopez’s work has been intriguing and has a special angle.  My biggest issue is there is way too much going on in such a short story.  If they were a bit longer it wouldn’t seem quite so farfetched that her characters were going through all of this together. We met Nico in previous stories and it was great to see his and Eris’s story pick up right where the previous one left off.  Eris was the type of character that keeps you on your toes at the same type she does Nico.  I enjoyed seeing her standing up for herself and ultimately kicking serious ass, but she was a little quick to make rash decisions.  Nico was intense in every definition of the world, falling for Eris quickly and making her his mate with very little forethought.  The two of them together made the story fun to read, but there lacked the depth I would love from a longer story.  I will say I loved the irony of Nico’s gods-given task and the name of the woman he falls in love with, bringing in just enough Greek mythology to make my little classicist heart beat harder.  I am looking forward to whoever’s story is next in this series, but Nico and Eris’s story was a nice way to spend an afternoon in another world.  I enjoy Ms. Lopez’s work and hope that future stories might be a little bit longer to allow for more character development and relationship.

ARC Mini-Review: Maybe This Kiss (Colorado Ice #1)

Maybe This Kiss (Colorado Ice #1)

by Jennifer Snow

Blurb:
Love is always worth the risk . . .
Neil Healy was happy to be promoted to Air Force Lieutenant, but he's less than thrilled that the new job has brought him back to his hometown. The memories alone could kill a man, to say nothing of actually seeing the woman he never got over. Neil knew avoiding Becky Westmore would be impossible, but he didn't expect the chemistry between them to be as strong as ever.
All Becky wants this holiday season is to get through the month of December with her sanity intact. Not helping? Her ex-boyfriend's return to Glenwood Falls. Even after a decade apart, Neil still makes her feel in ways no other man has. But Christmas is a time for miracles, and maybe Becky's will be a second chance at first love.

Review:
Beginning an all new series from a new author is always fun, especially when you can get in on the ground floor—or in other words get a free preview before the series is even public.  I haven’t read anything by Ms. Snow before but I can see myself enjoying this series immensely so I might check out her other works.  Maybe This Kiss begins the Colorado Ice series with fireworks. Neil and Becky were each other’s first loves, but when life became just a bit too real and complicated they went their separate ways, though neither of them stopped loving.  Now Many years later Neil is back in his hometown and resisting the pull to Becky is becoming harder and harder.  Becky is now a widower with a young daughter and she has no interest in rekindling a romance with her first love, especially since the reason she called off their relationship the first time is still a very real fear for her.  I loved getting to know Becky and Neil and felt connected to them and cried right along with Becky when her fears and hang-ups came close to losing out on love a second time for her.  Neil is a strong hero and his sweetness and determination made him the perfect match for Becky.  I liked Becky a lot, could relate to her very real distress in the military lifestyle, but I knew she would find a way once Neil reminded her just how soul deep their love truly went.  The emotions between these two were sweet and their chemistry was obvious, though I will say I was a little disappointed on the editing of the passionate parts of the story.  Hopefully in future stories, Jennifer will allow her readers to experience the full heat of the passion alongside her characters.  Becky’s brothers, who will be the main stars in coming books I believe, were so sweet and alpha and I am looking forward to seeing them fall in love and find a way to their HEAs.  I can see this series being a great experience and I can’t wait to get started on the next story, Maybe This Time.

ARC Review: Barefoot at Midnight (Barefoot Bay Timeless #3)

Barefoot at Midnight (Barefoot Bay Timeless #3)

by Roxanne St. Claire

Blurb:
Lawson Monroe is a chef without a restaurant...until his friend and mentor makes a deathbed promise to leave Law the only dive bar on Mimosa Key. Law has big plans for the Toasted Pelican until he walks directly into the luscious body and gorgeous face of Libby Chesterfield and her outrageous claim that the bar and restaurant should come to her.
When Libby learned that the man who once owned the crappiest watering hole on the island was actually her biological father, she decided the least he owed her was his unclaimed business. The old man wasn't there for her when she and her brother were growing up in Barefoot Bay, but his legacy can help her build a new future when she transforms the property into Balance, a yoga studio. The only obstacle? Her father apparently named former bad boy and current sexy silver fox Law Monroe his heir.
Law never thought he'd want anything more than the chance to make a living cooking his food for the people of Barefoot Bay...but Libby arouses an irresistible hunger in him. Battling an attraction that sizzles hotter than one of Law's cast-iron skillets and uncovering long-buried secrets with more twists than one of Libby's yoga poses, they'll have to find a way to both get what they want...especially if what they really want is each other.

Review:
Roxanne St Claire continues to make her readers happy and never fails to give them an exciting ride and two people that you can fall in love with as they find themselves and each other.  This story is the final in a trilogy within the overall Barefoot Bay world, a trilogy all about three sexy silver foxes that have found love later in life.  Now I’m willing to read just about anything that Rocki writes, but I will say that while I enjoyed this set of stories, I am not as enamored as many of her readers are, possibly because I’m still on the younger side of life, being only 30 years old (for the next few days at least).  If you are new to the trilogy, or even to the entire Barefoot series, I can only ask where you’ve been because you have missed out on a seriously awesome ride.  But luckily Rocki’s skill with words will allow you to jump right in with Law and Libby’s love story.    This story is one that is full of learning to forgive, others and yourself, in order to find a way to be happy.  Love and loss, drama and trauma, all come together to allow two people to find their HEA and come together with true love and trust.  Being a longtime fan girl of Rocki’s I can honestly say I’m enjoying every moment of this series and am looking forward to seeing who arrives in the Barefoot world and falls in love despite all odds and fears.
Lawson has lived a challenging life and has finally found what he wants out of life, but now he has to get around a woman that has always intrigued him in order to secure his future.  Lawson has been working for the past year, since the death of his best friend, the closest to a real father he has ever had, to find a way for his dream of opening a small restaurant to come true.  He has tried and tried to find the people that swooped in and took over the restaurant after his friend’s death but, to date, has had no luck.  Libby is finally realizing her dream, opening a yoga studio—right in the location of Law’s dream restaurant. Law and Libby butt heads as they challenge one another, leaving Libby and Law fighting one another with the determination that fuels those dreams.  Soon that passion leads them down the slippery slope of lust and love, but Libby’s inability to truly trust anyone, let alone a man, leaves Law struggling to get everything he wants—Libby, heart and soul.  When the truth of their shared pasts finally comes to light, can they forgive one another and find a way to trust in their hearts, or will their love be left to fade away?
Lawson is an intriguing guy; he has interested me since he first appeared in the barefoot world, two novels previous, and the more we get to know him the more I love him.  He has led a roller coaster life, fighting his addictions, and finding a way to make a positive mark on the world.  He is obviously a sexy man, even if he is on the other side of midlife crisis time, but his sweetness and inability to give up on his dreams make me like him even more.  His loyalty to those he loves, even long after they are no longer in his life, was a trait that is surely missing (for the most part) from the men of my generation.  He has found his calling in the world of food and if he could only get past the stubborn Libby he could fulfill his dreams. I was brought to tears several times as Law shared his life story with Libby, and the way he was able to get past the traumas in his life reminds me that with the right support, even the most tragic of circumstances can be overcome.  Libby was the support he needed, even as she fights her own fears and insecurities.  Libby has always felt like an object to the men in her life, not really seen as a person to love, but instead as a thing to own, and that has led her to have some serious uncertainties, even as she loses her heart to Law.  She has never had a man in her life that really saw her, leading her to become self-conscious and fighting tooth and nail for her independence.  I liked getting to know Libby, but I will admit that she made me angry more than once when she questioned Law’s honesty and love. When she finally gives in to her instincts and allows herself to give in to their passion, Libby becomes the woman she was always meant to be.
Barefoot at Midnight is the final in this trilogy of silver foxes and the women that finally capture their heart, and the Barefoot Bay Timeless trilogy is one that I will remember for a long time. Law, Mark, and Ken were three sexy men, despite their advanced ages and multitude of experiences adding up to make seriously interesting characters.  Lawson is looking for his place in life, trying to truly find his happiness, but he has no plans for a permanent woman in his life, until Libby waltzes back into his life and suddenly becomes almost all he can think about.  He has come a long way and once he accepts his past mistakes and releases his pain, he is able to embrace his future, both professionally and personally, even if it revolves around his love for Libby.  Libby has been put through the ringer by men in her past, but she is in no way prepared for Law or the impact he will have on her life.   Finding a way to experience true love, while also finding a path that allows both her and Law to achieve their dreams is a tall order for a woman that has never allowed herself to embrace her own personal dreams. Once Libby finds herself, finds her true ability to love and trust in her man, Libby learns that she can be truly, fully happy.  The heat between Libby and Law has been an undercurrent between them since they were first reunited, a heat that was there when they were just teenagers.  Once they give in to their passion, even if they cannot deal with the emotional fallout, the intensity is off the charts and one that neither of them have ever experienced before.  I enjoyed seeing both Law and Libby grow and become better people just by coming together. As I understand it, Rocki plans to continue her experimentation with lovers that have gotten a few more years under their belt than most other series out there today.  I will say that I will be reading anything that Ms. St. Claire leads my way, but hopefully we will return to some of the younger lovers as well.  If you are looking for an intensely emotional, sensual story about two people that have finally found their soulmate, Barefoot at Midnight will give you just what you are looking for, guaranteed. Rocki strikes again!

Devil and the Deep (Deep Six #2)

by Julie Ann Walker

Blurb:
Cocktail parties, political fundraisers, and charity events are Maddy Powers' way of life. But the daring man who appropriated her father's yacht a couple of months ago is still out there, somewhere, and she wants to pay him back for the scorching kiss they shared.
Behind his suave smile and ladykiller eyes, Bran Palladino carries a dark secret that keeps him from pursuing Maddy… even though he can't get her out of his head. But when Maddy is kidnapped as part of a grand scheme, it's time to put up or shut up… because Bran can't live without Maddy now.

Review:
Returning to the small island in the Gulf of Mexico, Walker takes us on a fast paced adventure as one man tries to save the woman he has begun to have feelings for when she once again finds herself in trouble.  Walker’s style of writing is one that might take some getting used to for readers, mainly because the majority of her story happens within a single twenty-four-hour period.  But with the backstory between Maddy and Bran it doesn’t seem forced, their love already simmering in their souls and just waiting for the two of them to admit their feelings for one another. Maddy is one of those girls that could be a total bitch, Daddy’s money always at hand and everything being available for the taking.  Thankfully Maddy has grown into a sweet and kind-hearted woman, always looking out for others and trying to find a way to get Bran to see they are meant for one another.  Bran is tired; he’s tired of all the death and loss he had to suffer as a Navy SEAL and now that he retired to become a treasure hunter, he hates that he keeps finding himself in the role of rescuer.  When Maddy is kidnapped—AGAIN—Bran won't allow anything to happen to this bright and engaging woman that has brought out emotions in him that he’s kept hidden for years.  During the course of the story we see Maddy and Bran confront and deal with their emotional connection as well as the kidnappers that they are working to thwart.  The passion between them is so undeniable that they find themselves giving in to it, even if the time and setting are lousy. I really loved seeing Maddy stand up for what she wanted from Bran and forcing him to see how great they could be together, overcoming his rules and fears about women and loss.  Ms. Walker’s characters are always put through the ringer several times before they ever come to their HEA, but she writes with such skill that you don’t find yourself questioning the oddness of everything that happens in so short a time until it’s over.  Honestly there’s so much happening to her characters in this story that it could have been ridiculous, but once again Julie Ann proves that she is a queen of romance for a reason.  Not to be discounted are the side characters in the story, mainly Bran’s friends Mason and Alex, who I really hope to see get their own story soon.  I am dying to find out what happens next for this crew of sexy SEAL cum treasure hunters as they try to find the missing treasure ship they are seeking.  There’s never a dull moment in a Walker novel and whatever happens next I can guarantee that it will be action packed and full of passion.  If you missed the first story in this series I suggest you get it read too, but in the meantime let Bran and Maddy take you on an adventure with Devil and the Deep.

Review:
Ok so I will begin this review with a guilty confession…
When I saw this new series, a while ago, by Jackie Frank, I was beyond ready for whatever she sent my way again.  I have loved everything Jackie has every written, even if sometimes it can be a little bit strange and of course I am an AVID fan of her Nightwalkers series.  But after reading the first book in this series, which I sadly didn’t care for and had real trouble getting into, I waited and waited to start this story until all four in the series were released and I was feeling beyond guilty for putting off my reading/review.  So when I picked up this story I didn’t have very high expectations of enjoying the story or being able to get into it. And boy do I feel like an ass now!
This second book in the Immortal Brothers series, revolving around Garreth was a great read that I wasn’t able to put down, finishing it in less than a day and then realizing I’d neglected all my needs in order to stay in this amazing world.  Garreth's story begins when he is released from a horrible punishment of the gods in exchange for his abilities to conquer cities in order to spread their name and make them more powerful.  While he is definitely a deadly and dangerous warlord, he is not without honor or nobility.  He was a kickass sweetheart, my FAVORITE type of hero.  And though he works alongside his oldest brother, he is definitely his own man and not willing to give on his principles in order to make his brother happy.  When he comes face to face with Sarielle the first time he is instantly attracted and there is no way that he will be able to keep away from her.  He is hardheaded for sure, but his stubbornness allows him to get things done, including saving her life and the life of her wyvern partner.  I really loved the way he was willing to devote himself to begging the gods for the happiness of his lover when he thinks he has lost her forever, but the moment he gets a second chance at her love, he gives his all to be the man she needs.  I enjoyed getting to know Sarielle too.  She is the type of woman that makes a great role model for others.  She has devoted her life to being the best older sister she can and caring for the twin girls she was left in charge of when they were orphaned.  While she has a lot of inner strength, her confidence in that strength was often in need of a boost, but she never let that stop her from accomplishing the goals she sets for herself.  When she has the chance to share herself with this strong, sweet, and deadly man, she doesn’t shy away from him, instead embracing their passion and grabbing for any happiness she can, knowing that life can change in an instant.  In the end I cried and fell in love right alongside with Garreth and Sarielle and when they found their HEA and a way to fully come together for life I knew that I had shortchanged Jackie.  Ms. Frank’s ability to make readers fall in love with her characters and become devoted to their happiness is beyond compare;  while I will say the first in the series was a miss for me, Cursed By Ice reminds me why I LOVE Jackie and always instantly jump into any new series she offers me.  I definitely won’t be waiting very long before I begin Jaykun’s story Bound by Sin, so stay tuned to the blog for that soon.  The magic is back for me, for sure, with this tale of tragedy, reform, love, and societal progress and I cannot wait for more.

Review:
Ok so I have to preface this review as saying I am NOT a fan of stories written in first person, especially ones where the first person POV changes back and forth from one person to another throughout the story.  It is just a personal issue with me and I have only ever found 1 or 2 authors that can do it well enough that it doesn’t drive me utterly insane.  And as much as I enjoyed the content of this novel, I did NOT care for this change in writing style from the original series (Club Sin) that I read and which lead me to request this story as well.  Had it been written in third person and I could have really gotten into the meat of the story, I imagine this one would have gotten more stars, but it just seemed to be missing something to me in this writing style.
That being said, the story itself was a fun read and I enjoyed seeing Allie and Micah maneuvering around one another as they tried to find a way to both get what they wanted. This series revolves around the Masters of the DC, or Dominants Council, that we met previously in the Club Sin series finale.  I was very intrigued when I learned they would have their own story and wanted very much to read them.  Going into the first in the series, I expected something similar to the Club Sin series but what I got was very different.  Micah has just acquired a new business to add to his outrageously large holdings and along with it comes the sweet and intriguing Allie.  Their first interaction leaves them both wondering if they should pursue the heat that runs under their skin like a live current ready to spark into an explosion.  Even though Allie resists him as much as she possibly can, Micah is ultimate able to break her down and convince her to give him a chance.  Micah was an interesting guy, obviously a dominant by nature, but he was not the confident and strong man I expected in all ways, still unsure and hiding parts of himself that Allie needed to see to feel fully connected with him.  I loved seeing him finally come to terms with his part, thanks to Allie’s help, and finally accepting that darker part of his nature, once he stopped being an ass.  Allie on the other hand was a great character from the very beginning.  She held her ground against the extremely dominant Micah and continuously called him on his crap, making him really think about his actions and how they affect people.  I loved seeing her discovering all of Micah’s secrets and then surprising him at every turn and defying his expectations.  She was truly a gem of a character and I only hope the rest of the gals in the coming stories are just as great.  The series will revolve around all the men on the DC and I look forward to seeing them each find their match and (hopefully) someone to embrace all sides of their natures, especially Derek, Allie’s half-brother, who’s book is next I do believe.  While I didn’t care for the writing style I am willing to work through it in hopes that the rest of the stories give me as many laughs, tears, and hot-flashes as Micah and Allie’s story of lust, dominance, love and acceptance.
*Note- if you are looking for a story revolving around simple sex or dungeon BDSM scenes, this will not be the story for you.  But if you are looking for a story about a true loving relationship, where there is just enough Dominance to add some spice then you will enjoy Bound Beneath His Pain.

Review:
I have several favorite authors and, of course, with that familiarity comes certain expectations about how their books will progress, but I am always willing to branch into something new when an author experiments.  So when I heard that Sara Humphreys, one of my favorite paranormal authors, was writing a contemporary series I was ready to jump on board with no hesitation.  I really liked the first story in the McGuire Brothers series and am looking forward to the rest of the stories, but Ronan’s was unique in that the heroine was familiar to both him and readers in a way that might have made a love story seem difficult.  But Sara manages to make the story believable while still showing the issues that we sometimes have to get over or let go of before we can truly find love.  Maddy lost the man she loved and had been with for almost a decade less than a year ago and she didn’t handle the loss very well.  She has isolated herself in the big city and decided that love and men are no longer in her future.  But the sexy and sweet Ronan refuses to allow Maddy to give up on love and he is just the man to remind her that she is still alive.  Ronan is truly an alpha male, protecting those around him with his whole heart, even if they don’t want him to.  I loved seeing them butting heads and the sparks that light off of them when it happens.  When they are around their friends and family, they are definitely at their best, lowering their guards and walls and enabling the love that has been slowly building between them to finally become so obvious to them both.  This story was full of tears, laughs, sweetness, and sexiness, definitely leaning towards the more intense parts of life but doing it in a way that give hope instead of despair.  I enjoyed seeing them come together and blending into the McGuire Clan and, of course, the moment Maddy is in danger Ronan and his trusty k-9 partner, Bowser, kick ass to get her safely back into his arms.  Humphreys strikes a chord bringing up the difference between loving someone, no matter how deeply or how long, and truly being in love and well-matched, reminding us that settling in life is never the way to go.  I loved seeing Maddy finally accept that GREAT LOVE is truly out there and her soulmate was Ronan, even though she loved Rick and always would in a way.  I am looking forward to whichever brother falls in love next and know that I will be ready to read that one ASAP.  Humphreys has a talent that can take her readers from the highest high to the lowest low and still manages to give us the HEA we need in the end to make a great romance.  To be repetitive, Sara is, and will remain, one of my favorite authors.
