Review:

What is this world coming to when a secret society of menage lovers can no longer rule government and civilization without people getting all self-righteous and kidnapping newlyweds? In this newest story from partners-in-crime Mari Carr and Lil Dubois we get to see how three such newly bound individuals will fight for their lives and their chance at an HEA when a group of bigoted morons try their hand at kidnapping and exposing the Trinity Masters to the world.  I absolutely love this series and have been a fan since I picked up book number two after being in love with Mari Carr’s other series, never imaging just how deep and dark some of these stories and the linked Masters’ Admirability series were going to take us into the human psyche and the world of espionage and historical secrets.  I enjoyed this story very much, despite that dark nature of the plotline, but I really wish there had been more of their time after their rescue and before their final binding ceremony, just to enjoy their day-to-day lives and watching them falling deeper in love.  I am dying to see what comes next in these connected worlds and see just what could go wrong next, but I know whatever it is nothing will prepare us for the triad that finds themselves called to the altar and whatever amazing adventure they will live together.

Izabel Serra knew that when she was finally called to the altar her life would be changed forever, but she never imagined it would be because her and her new fiancés would be kidnapped on their second night together. Brennon Reyes is a sexy Hollywood screenwriter and Rowan Greene is a former special forces pilot, but none of them are any match for the small private army that invades their hotel suite determined to take them hostage, despite Rowan’s efforts and willingness to inflict maximum damage.  When the three of them ultimately wake up in a glorified prison deep in the woods, none of them know what they are in for, but they know it’s not going to be a walk in the park.  As their captors’ torture and beat them, working to break their bodies and spirits, their connections deepens and they come to depend on one another, but as the danger becomes more and more deadly, they know they have to work together to escape.  When they are transported to another location, ultimately, they find themselves reunited with the kidnapped Grand Master and her husband, and the five of them work together to turn the tables of their captors, but the damage had been done.  Can they prevent the world from learning about the Trinity Masters and their malicious and hateful kidnappers from bringing to light a secret that has been kept for centuries? And in all of that time can three people mutually find love or have they lost their chance to find a loving connection and a way to build their future?

These three were put through some serious crap at the very beginning of their relationship for sure, not to say that others in these series haven’t been, because there have certainly been darker stories.  Izabel is a ball buster and brash from the very beginning and I was certainly afraid her sassy mouth was going to get her in trouble with the kidnappers more than once, but that sarcasm certainly helped her out more than once.  She was able to bring herself back from the brink more than once when I can say I would have lost my mind for sure, and that strength and determination made her a beautiful character.  I loved seeing her standing up to their captors, not only to get their attention to protect her men, but also in order to simply get back a piece for herself, because I certainly understand that need for vengeance. She was also sweet and vulnerable when she allowed herself to find that safety in her men’s arms, willing to let down those thick walls and offer herself to them, so they can see the heart of her. Brennon is definitely the softest and lightest of the trio, not to say he was weak, but his ability to find lightness through the dark was definitely the key to their survival more than once and I respect that ability.  He was hilarious, sweet, loving, charming, and the perfect match for his lovers, bringing them the balance to their dominance and darkness in order that their triad wouldn’t always be filled with seriousness and solemnity.  Seeing him bring Rowan out of his dark shell, finding the heart of the man, even as he backed him up and protected them in times of needs shows that he could be counted on to be just what they needed and of course he was always the soft arms that Izabel needed when she was ready to fall apart and release her fears and pain.  Rowan has a lot of demons in his past, and pain from his time in the military, but his greatest darkness is his fear that he won’t be able to protect those he loves, so when he finds himself in just that nightmare, he is almost unable to function.  But his dedication to making sure that Izabel and Brennon make it home safely shows that he will give everything, even his last breath to protect them and get them out of their captivity.  He is strong, brave, clever, intelligent, and stubborn enough to do whatever he has to, despite his fears, and when he finally opens his heart to Izabel and Brennon, we see just how damaged he truly is.   When they are finally free, able to relax and live their lives, we get to see that Rowan can heal with his lovers help and will be the perfect husband to them and support them with every fiber of his being.

This story really resonated with me, in this world filled with liars, bigots, and hate, coming down to truly being a story of one man with entirely too much power and greed who almost cost five good people their lives and ultimately would have sacrificed them for his lies.   I’ll try not to spoil the story but honestly if people just stopped living their lives so self-wrapped and evil, this story wouldn’t even have ever been able to be conceived by our great writers of mischief… But I digress.  This story has a great flow, the plotline one we have been dying to see the ending to, with great buildup, flow, and ultimately an ending to the story arc that answers all our questions.  I was thrilled to see this throuple find their HEA and get to their binding ceremony to they can continue to build their lives and give their love a true chance for a future.  Izabel is a strong and sweet woman that needs two men to counter her and give her the balance she needs and when she finds those perfect men, despite the deadly circumstance of their time together she will do whatever it takes to claim and protect them. Brennon is the lighthearted and sweet one of the trio, though he has no experience in these situations, he will do whatever is needed to keep his lovers safe and most importantly sane as they work to escape and turn the table son their captors.  Rowan has given up on ever having an open and loving relationship, but he will keep his new lovers safe at even the cost of his own life, but he must find a way to get them all home safely because the longer he knows them the more he needs them.  These three, plus the Grand Master and captured husband are all that stands between the Trinity Masters and discovery, but they are up to the challenge. I loved the ending of this story, even though there were some very dark and tear-inducing moments, so fair warming to those readers that can’t handle it.  The passion between these three is not as apparent as in some previous stories as they aren’t able to connect physically through much of the story but the connection is certainly apparent and as it builds the love deepens and solidifies. I am dying to see where these series take us next and I suspect that the next story will be in the Masters’ Admirability series, though it just a guess.  As always, Mari and Lila have a deft hand at leading readers into the darkness to show us that only in the darkness can you find the true light of love and I for one will keep coming back for more!

ARC Review: Marked in Flames (Aspen Pack #5)

Marked in Flames (Aspen Pack #5)

Carrie Ann Ryan

Blurb:

My mate rejected me, leaving me broken. I refuse to let that happen again—even if Steele is the one for me.

I hold the power of flame and future in my hands, but I know the world is watching. Waiting for us to fall.

The truth and lies that bind the Aspen Pack together are crumbling and I am to bear witness to its fate.

I know the Enforcer of the Aspens is my mate.

Yet neither of us want what fate decrees.

So, we’ll fight side by side and ignore the burning attraction between us.

Only when a traitor rocks the foundation of all we know, we might not have a choice to who we cling to in despair.

The vampires were only the pawns in this war.

The demons are on their way.

And if we’re not careful, the Aspen Pack could lose someone that breaks them.

And I could lose my mate.

Again.

Review:

I have to say I was so looking forward to reading this story when we met Jade in the last novel, but when Carrie Ann Ryan shared that this was to be her last Paranormal release—at least for a long while—I have to say my heart broke. I have been a huge fan of Ms. Ryans from the beginning and while I have branched into all of her genres, my heart was first caught by her writing her pack series and it will always be first for me, so learning we wouldn’t be getting all the other HEAs and matings that we just know are waiting for us, almost made me not want to read this one.  That said when I did finally crack the book and allow myself to just enjoy Steele and Jade’s story, I was glad to see them get their HEA and find a way to overcome all their obstacles. This story is filled with revelations, epic battles, grudges, and a love that we never expected, and in the end the pack is finally safe for the time being and they can recover and grow in a time of rest. I really enjoyed every tear-inducing and thrilling moment of this story and while I am dying to know I won’t find out what happens with so many of the beloved couples and triads that we wanted to see come from these characters, I hold out hope that someday we will learn their fates and get to enjoy their love stories as well.

Jade is a fire witch, but one that has a secret and just a little something extra that makes her more deadly than her other elemental sisters and brothers.  She is willing to help the Packs in their fight against the Demon and his minions, even going so far as to help establish a new Coven, but she refuses to become Pack, in any way.  This includes joining with the man that she knows she is a possible mate to, even though neither of them is willing to admit it.  Steele has been drawn to this fiery redheaded witch from the beginning, but he refuses to take a mate, any mate, much less a witch, and definitely not when they are in the middle of the most dangerous war that they have ever faced. Though the sexual attraction is undeniable, they continue to believe they can give into their baser needs without forcing a bond. But when their hands are forced, neither Steele nor Jade are willing to allow their enemy to defeat them, even if it means doing something neither of them ever imagined doing—mating.  Now they have to come to terms with all their secrets and find a way to trust and depend on one another, or their enemy might truly defeat them and win the war one and for all.

This is a connection that we knew was going to be sizzling from the beginning because both Jade and Steele are both so stubborn and unwilling to bend on their belief that they know what is best.  Jade has been dreadfully hurt in her past, left alone more than once in her past and she truly has become a lone wolf.  While she is strong, sassy, wickedly dangerous, and uniquely powerful, she also has a scary vulnerability that she tries so hard to hide from others, knowing that weakness like that could be the end of her. She is smart and knows that losing herself to her own power and darkness will leave those counting on her with no defense against their enemy and that she is their most powerful secret weapon is she can just get close enough.  I loved seeing her finally opened herself to not only Steele but his pack and show her full self to them and finally get to experience that full acceptance that she has always believed she would never find. Steele has always feared losing his mate, seeing other Enforcers when they’ve lost their mates and never wanting to experience anything like that.  That fear forced him to keep himself back from any chance at a future, but the Goddess has her own plans and she certainly paired him with the perfect match to his stubbornness.  His strength, determination, alpha strength, dedication, protectiveness, and faithfulness make him the perfect male for Jade once he finally accepts that he can no longer resist her. Accepting her help when he is at his lowest, even as he tries to push her away for her own safety, we see a vulnerability that just makes him seem all the more human and fallible, proving that no one is impervious and we can’t ever thrive in true solitude. These two truly needed on another to survive and have a future together, one that will allow them to save and change the world for the better.

While I am said to say that Marked in Flames is the end of the Aspen pack series (as of now), I can say that the ending was satisfying and I was thrilled to have gotten to enjoy the story of these amazing shifters and the Witches that made their packs so rich and full of life. Jade and Steele being the final story to this series made perfect sense and I enjoyed watching them find their way into happiness and to defeating their enemy once and for all. Jade is the type of solitary witch that keeps her distance from others for their protection, not because she doesn’t crave the love and connection of others.  She’s always wanted to belong and be loved by another, but her differences have kept her apart and now that she knows it’s even more likely to be uncovered, she has no hope of her fated mate ever being hers.  Steele doesn’t ever plan to mate, much less with the fiery Witch that has grabbed him by the heart from the moment they met, but the more he gets to know her, especially seeing her battling again and again to protect his friends and family, the harder she is to resist.  Their passion burns bright at all times, but its only when they finally give into the chemistry that the fire threatens to burn the world and then once they admit their feelings that fire begins to mellow into a manageable warming glow.  While I can honestly say I cried through probably MOST of this story, I loved every second of it and just might have to plan a re-read over the holidays when I have more time off work to do that.  I am truly hoping that some time in the (not too far off) future Ms. Ryan decides to return to the world of the Pacific Packs and allow the rest of her beloved characters to have their matings, I loved this series and the finale is worth every moment.  Another fantastic ending Carrie Ann and I thank you for putting all your energy, heart, and soul into sharing this story with us all!

Review:

The next installment of the Skye Druids leads us to some unexpected revelations and the Druids are in for some strange revelations, but the story truly does revolve around two people finding one another in the most unexpected of moments and finding love when neither of them ever expected it. This series truly is a continuation of the long-running Dark Series that Donna Grant has been enthralling readers with for over a decade and I have been a fan since the very beginning, through all the changes and surprises that these characters have gone through and all the next characters we have met.  Being Scottish myself love the settings, characters, storylines, and mythos that Donna creates as she builds her worlds and each of the smaller arcs within the over-reaching arc of the Dark world. As we learn more and more about this world of Fae, Druids, Dragons and Kings, we learn that we know less and less; honestly I cannot wait to see what she manages to pull out o her hat next and which of the lovers she is going to bring together, but I know it is going to be a wild ride and they the magic with amaze and excite readers as we are swept along with the characters as she send of on the new adventure. If you are looking for a heart wrenching, action packed, deadly, magickal story of love, danger, deception, and passion, look no further than Heart of Glass.

Theo Frasier is both Druid and Inspector, making it difficult to straddle the line as he works to investigate the murders that have become so frequent on the Isle of Skye in recent months.  He knows the perpetrator is a druid and so are the victims, but he can’t explain that to the others on the force, the non-druids, because they know nothing about the magick, but he needs to find this killer asap before more there are more victims. Ferne Crawford is a Druid with a terrible gift to see events that she often can’t stop but she is determined this time to stop the terrible darkness that is coming for the Skye Druids that could threaten the very existence of all Druids around the world if it manages to get a foothold on Skye.  But when she arrives on Skye, she and Theo are immediately drawn to one another and the connection between them is undeniable, even though they can’t seem to find a way to connect with everything going on.  When they are finally pushed back together by circumstances, forced to work together to try uncover who is behind the most recent deaths on Skye, Theo and Ferne have to find a way to decide if their connection is more than a temporary lust, perhaps a divine match, and fight for one another against all odds in order to have a future together no matter what or who tries to pull them apart.  And when the ultimate battle comes, they have to fight together with their friends to protect their new relationship.

Ferne was one of those character you weren’t quite sure you were going to connect with in the beginning, her mysterious and secretive nature making it somewhat difficult to see if you would like her, but in the end, I truly loved her.  She is the perfect mix of lover and fighter, truly knowing that sometimes the best offense if a defense and that the best weapon against hate is love.  I loved seeing her kicking butt in her way, fighting to have her chance at a future with Theo and to prove that she is the woman that can make him happy, even though she wasn’t sure in the beginning that she quite deserved such a good guy.  She was sweet, loving, brave, and smart, even knowing that protecting those she loved was more important than their egos.  I have loved Theo from the very beginning, meeting him in previous stories, and knew that his story was going to be great.  He is just the type of character that you root for, wanting him to find his HEA because he is such a great guy.  He is brave, steadfast, dedicated, and strong, his character is never called into question and his intelligence is almost as strong as his magic making him truly a great addition to any team.  He is determined to find the killer but more importantly he is determined that he will not lose Ferne no matter is he has to go into Hell on a slight chance that he can bring her back.  Who wouldn’t love a guy like that? To be honest Theo is the perfect hero, just alpha enough without is being overbearing, protective and sweet, but passionate and loving.  He is also shrewd in the way he approaches his investigation, but he is a little too trusting in some cases because he finds it hard to believe that some people really can be that evil.

Heart of Glass is the perfect mix of a warrior and the calm peaceful woman that steals his heart and teaches him that sometimes love if the answer to defeating an enemy driven by hate.  I loved every moment of this story and this journey through Skye and the history of the Druids that call it home continues to fascinate me.  Ferne is a truly amazing woman, one that has overcome adversity left and right, loss and trauma, but she continues to trust and love, fighting for goodness and giving love to those that earn it from her.  Theo is a warrior and champion for his people, one that straddles the line between two worlds in order to provide the protection his people need; he is on a quest for protect his people from the danger stalking them even as he watches those around his find love and wishes for a great love of his own.  When these two are thrown together by fate and circumstances, Ferne and Theo have to overcome untold obstacles, mistrust, and even the specter of death itself in order to have a chance at a future together, but they are obviously meant to find one another. The passion these two sparks in one another is a firestorm from the beginning and they only get hotter when they are finally able to devote time to each other, leaving us with no doubt that the fire will burn hot enough to warm their lives through eternity. I am dying to know what drama will come next for these Druids now and see who will find love next, and of course there is one big mystery left unsolved –What happened with Ferne’s brother, if anything? — that could lead to a very interesting story.  No doubt wherever Donna takes us next, it will be filled with love, passion, magick, and imagination as she weaves a new HEA for two people that will be forever in our hearts.
