Review: Driven (Deep Ops #4)

Driven (Deep Ops #4)

by Rebecca Zanetti

Blurb:

Unswerving: Angus Force is determined to hunt down the serial killer he’d once shot dead—or so he thought. But an anonymous source reports that Lassiter is alive. Force hasn't slept since, knowing it’s only a matter of time before “the Surgeon” strikes again. And soon, a body is found, bearing Lassiter’s same maniacal MO. It’s just the beginning of a murderous trail blazing through DC and Virginia, right to Force’s backyard . . .

Unstoppable: Nari Zhang is the shrink for the ragtag Deep Ops Unit, though she isn’t Force’s shrink—which is a very good thing. Because once they’re thrown together on the case, their attraction is explosive and irresistible. They’ll just have to fight that much harder to keep the heat between them from flaming out of control. But things are about to become far more challenging, and deadly, than they could have imagined . . .

Unhinged: Once the killer catches a glimpse of Nari, she becomes his new obsession. She is now the focus point—for both Force and Lassiter—in a dangerous dance for survival . . .

Review:

So the undeniably unique Deep Ops team has a new challenge to face in this new story of betrayal, passion and deadly danger that will leave you shocked and terrified as you learn the truth that has eluded their leader for years.  I loved this series from the very first book—though I didn’t much doubt loving any Zanetti story—and have just fallen more an more in love with it as the series went on.  I’m not sure if it will end with Angus and Nari’s story, but if it does I can honestly say that it was and ending that will not leave you wanting in any way. Our story picks up right where the last one ended, but Angus and his team are being torn apart as their bosses sack the team and their time together runs out.  Angus has been after a serial killer he knows is still alive but the rest of the world is dead, and he refuses to give up the hunt.  Nari fears for his sanity, but at the same time she understands that his instincts and skills are enough that he might be on to something as his time finds themselves in the crosshairs of a copycat killer. Angus tries to push Nari away for her own safety but she sticks like a burr and soon the desire they have both been denying since they met explodes and they are left with the emotional and mental dangers that falling in love leaves them in and it makes Nari even more the target Angus was determined to keep her from becoming. Angus knows that their lives are all in danger until he can capture this killer that has been toying with him for years, but as the clock ticks down in his mind he can no longer deny he has fallen for Nari and needs her in his life.  When she is captured by the psychotic bastard, Angus will do anything and risk everything to keep her safe, even if it costs his own life, but Nari is just as determined to protect the man she loves.  Boy was this story full of CRAZY.  I loved every single second of this story and there was not a single moment I wanted to put it down.  Angus is a badass, but his doubts and fears on top of the years chasing and profiling psycho-killers have left him a little off and a lot on edge.  He knows something is off with this killer, but he continues to be unable to place his finger fully on what it is, until it is almost too late.  He is definitely intelligent, but his sweetness, dedication, and the way he cares for those he loves and counts as his people made me love him even more.  And lets not forget he certainly owns the strangest, sweetest, and craziest dog in the world which just makes him cooler.  Nari has lived her whole life trying to meet the unreachable standards her father sets, but that isn’t really the woman she wants to be, and the more time she spends with her new team the more she learns that woman is perfectly fine. She is smart, sassy, kickass, and sensual, but when she is standing up to and for her man and friends she is the best.  I loved seeing her in action and kickass and taking names, but the best times were when she was able to remind Angus that he is more than just a hunter, that he is a man and the perfect match for the woman she is finding herself to be. The passion between these two has been simmering since the very first book and when it finally explodes the fire is as hot as a volcanic eruption, but underlying that is the friendship they have built, however reluctantly, and the emotional connection that will carry them through for all their years together. This series has been intriguing, fascinating and amazing from the very beginning and we have been waiting for Nari and Angus to finally admit their attraction and feelings for several books now, but I for one can tell you this story surpassed even my expectations with a truly unexpected villain and so many twists and turns along the way.  The ending was sweet and seemed to bring the whole teams full circle in the best way and (if its fully over) gave us a glimpse of them building their lives together.  I’m hoping their might be more in the series or a spinoff so we get to see these folks again, but if not I am fully satisfied to have enjoyed this whole series and know I will be back to visit again sometimes in the future.  Another jewel in Zanetti’s collection.
