Review:
I can fully admit I was not that big a fan of
the first book in this series so I waited quite a while to pick up this second
book in the series, skeptical that it would be worth my time. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that I
really enjoyed this story and Colt and Belle were characters I found myself liking
a lot as I read their story of tragedy and trauma and watched them fall in
love. This series is one with a rather
unique premise on the story of shifters and their interactions with vampires. Mortal
enemies doesn’t even begin to cover it in my opinion as the vampires are
actively seeking ways to bring the death of every shifter they come
across. Additionally this idea of huge
packs of shifters living on ranches in the west is intriguing as the packs are
insulated and very against “rogue” shifters coming into their territory, when
most of the rogues aren’t such by choice.
There seemed to be a bit of a political statement buried in there but I
like the premise all the same. Belle is just one such rogue wolf, she is on the
run from the packs that want to hold her accountable for crimes she didn’t
commit, just because she was in the vicinity by unfortunate circumstance, but
when one passionate encounter with the Grey Wolf high commander changes her
life, she has to decide if she is willing to change her wolf identity to have a
future with the man she is beginning to think might be integral to her
happiness. Colt has lived with secrets his whole life, ones that have left him
alone most of his life, even surrounded by friends and family in his pack, but
when he meets Belle he finds himself instantly drawn to the sexy she-wolf until
he learns her true identity. The consequences of their time together are
long reaching, and when she returns to Wolf Pack Run, risking her freedom and
safety, in order to update him on those facts, Belle and Colt have to decide if
a future together is worth risking everything to be together. I loved Bell’s
character. Even when she was terrified
and backed into a corner she never lost her sass or fire for life and freedom,
fighting back every step of the way. She
is passionate about her calling in life, determined to do what’s right no
matter the cost, protective of those she loves, and sweet to those that earn
her devotion. I really liked her with
Colt and it was obvious from the beginning that he admired and desire him as
much as she feared him. Colt was an enigma
for sure, but his strength and sweetness with Belle and those that he
considered weaker than him was admirable.
He was the kind of kickass, large-than-life, and dangerous male that
every woman wants and their back—and in their bed—and that no man wants as
their enemy. The heat between these two
was evident from the first moment, even when they were caught in the middle of
battle, but their quieter moments as they got to know one another were what
made me really believe their love story.
I am looking forward to more in this series now and really getting into
this interesting and unique concept to be sure. Maybe another author to add to
my favorites list too.
