Review:

I just love when an author gives us a sweet connecting novella to bridge two series and bring us closure for a character that has come into the lives of the main characters for a secondary reason.  Carly is great at doing this for us and her latest story does it again.  Axel Forrester came into the lives of the Kingston family when he joined Dash’s band the Original King’s also bringing his sister closer into their circle which gave her and Dash the perfect excuse to fall deeper in love and have their HEA.  But that of course left us wondering “what about Axel?”; well in Just One Wish we get to see Axel get a second chance at love with his high school girlfriend and first love when he discovers she is in his new hometown.  Axel finds himself more and more at loose ends when he isn’t working on his music, seeing his sister and new friends all settled into marital bliss and wondering when he will find love and a mature relationship.  He stumbles across his old girlfriend on social media and discovers she is just down the road now and, with the help of a cute and loving pup, he goes to sweep her off her feet. Tara Stillman lost her heart to Axel years ago, but since then her life has been devoted to work and her family.  She never imagined her first love would walk into her veterinary practice, with a borrowed dog in order to ask her out.  Quickly they both learn that they still have deep feelings for one another, but can their differences be overcome in order for them to have a relationship? I really enjoyed this short read and getting to see Axel as he came to terms with some of the behaviors and parts of his life that might not have made him so obviously marketable as the perfect lover.   He learned and grew as a person in a short period of time in order to become the man that he needed to be to offer Tara the love and committed relationship she deserved.  Tara was a little bit fearful in the beginning, but at the same time she never denied her feelings for Axel or that she wanted him deeply.  I loved watching the playfulness between them and the sweetness as Axel worked hard to convince Tara that she could rely on him and give her heart again.  I am dying for the next story in this long running series arc which will begin the new Dirty Dares Series (Just One Dare) and that new series looks to be intriguingly sexy for sure.  Carly keeps the magic coming and I see no end in sight for the Dare family and their friends.

ARC Review: Turn Up the Heat (Turn Up the Heat #4)

Turn Up the Heat (Turn Up the Heat #4)

by Marie Harte

Blurb:

Officer Cass Carmichael loves her job and does it well. Giving firefighter Mack Revere a speeding ticket after a warning was deserved? Knocking him off his feet in a soccer game? Beating him at darts, dominoes, and pool? Par for the course. Cass has always played to win. Yet when she fails to resist Mack's kisses, she doesn't mind losing.

Every time Cass sneers or jeers, Mack likes her a little bit more. For a firefighter, he's a laid-back guy in a profession that takes a lot of heart. Even though he's used to handling the heat, Cass makes him burn. But they both have concerns about their families and their futures, and they’ll have to decide if they should fan the flames between them or douse what might have been before one of them gets burned.

Review:

The final Station 44 Hottie is finally going to find love and while the end of this series is bittersweet, his story is full of laughs, tears, and sensuality that will keep you glued to the page from beginning to end. I have followed this series from the beginning and it has kept me laughing and loving along with these sexy firefighters and the women that have grabbed them by the *ahem* hearts and lead them into love. Marie Harte has a way of making her characters just outrageous enough that while we can laugh and roll our eyes at their antics, at the same time we are rooting for them to find the perfect match.  Mack’s story was one that we have long anticipated because we knew that whatever woman stole his heart would be spectacular and their story would be explosive. I enjoyed every second of reading their journey and watching as they learned more about themselves sand one another as they found a way into an HEA with the help of their friends and family.  I am sad to see the series ending, but I do hope that we get more contemporary romance from Marie because though I enjoy her paranormals, I feel she really shines in her humor and realistic contemporary romances the most.

Mack Revere is the last single man standing of his crew at Station 44 and he has begun to feel a little bit like the third wheel any time he tries to get together with his friends and their new ladies. He knows that his friends are just growing up and finding love and he is happy for them, but at the same time he hasn’t yet found a woman that he wants to settle down with, or has he?  The sexy, sassy, and kind of mean police officer Cassandra Carmichael has caught his eye in a big way, but she seems too able to resist his allure.  Cass Carmichael is more than attracted to the arrogant firefighter, but she’s not really sure if she wants a relationship, beyond a bed partner.  Soon they find that their emotions run much deeper than just friends and lovers and that connection is scary to them both in different ways and they have to work through their pasts and their hang-ups in order to have a chance to build a deeper relationship, assuming they want one.  Will either of them be willing to set aside their pride and fears to accept the truth and connection or will they step back and leave the love blossoming to die on the vine?

Mack was, on the surface, the typical egotistical, prideful and smartass alpha male that you would expect in his profession, but as you dig through the layer of his personality you begin to see all the vulnerabilities and fears that he carries.  He has a lot of hang-ups from his family and past that colors his relationships and certainly causes a few issues between him and Cass, but thankfully they work through those, but I enjoyed seeing him finally stand up to his family, even if that didn’t come to a perfect ending, because it finally gave him the confidence in himself to move on. He also had to accept a few failings in his own personality when it came to Cass in order to offer her what she needed which more than anything was a safe place to land if things went wrong in her life.  I loved seeing him force her to accept that there was more to them than just bed partners and proving again and again how great they were together outside the “bedroom”. Cass was a serious badass, and I mean that in the way that I could never be that mean and get away with it for sure, but it made her a great character. She has just the right level of competitiveness and nasty sass to be the alpha bitch and stand up to the arrogance of Mack’s level, but underneath she is a sweet and loving friend, daughter, and partner to be sure. There was a softness that Cass kept hidden that you had to dig deep to see but once we got to share that with Mack  her own insecurities were easy to spot. It’s difficult to be a woman in her profession and retain any softness, but she retains some softness inside her shell and it’s wonderful to see.  I could see Cass being that smart-ass friend that you always want to share a drink with and shoot the breeze at the end of a long week in order to wind down.

While this series has been one that touched on a lot of issues with characters exploring their fears, insecurities, and personal growth, ultimately each story was about two people discovering they were meant for one another and Mack and Cass’s story brings that around full circle. I couldn’t put this story down and know that it will be one that I could back to again and again in the future.  Cass was a badass with a heart of gold and led Mack on a merry chase to make him prove that he was good enough for her to risk her heart on him.  Mack was an arrogant alpha male that had a sweetness that made him perfectly equipped to prove to Cass they were meant for an HEA and their relationship was fun to watch develop and grow.  The passion between these two sparks from the very beginning whether they are throwing insults or heated looks and kisses at one another, then once they decide the time comes to fully embrace the heat, its almost too much to bear.  I am definitely sad to see the series ending, but I adored the entire experience of reading this series and I cannot wait for whatever Marie sends my way next.  If you are looking for a sexy read with hot firefighters, cute animals, and sassy women Turn Up the Heat will leave you more than satisfied!

Review: Ancient Vendetta (Ancients Rising #4)

Ancient Vendetta (Ancients Rising #4)

by Katie Reus

Blurb:

His responsibility is to his pack, his people—the territory of New Orleans.

When the world devolved into chaos and fire, Alpha wolf King kept his territory from collapsing. Now, every day it seems there’s a new challenge—rogue witches, treacherous vampires, evil dragons. But his biggest threat is Aurora. Unique, magical, a female who sees him, the male, and not simply the Alpha in charge. But she’s thrown up so many walls that he’s afraid he’ll never be able to break through to the woman behind them. When the most dangerous threat they’ve ever faced ravages the city he’ll need her at his side—to defeat it, and then claim the woman who already owns him, body and soul.

But she makes him want more.

After being held captive for a year, Aurora has embraced her freedom. For the first time in her life she’s living away from her older sister in a new territory. A new world. She’s made friends and is helping New Orleans get back on its feet. Giving to others is helping her combat her PTSD, but she’s far from the woman she used to be. Even so, she can’t fight her ever present and growing attraction to King. Except she’s afraid she’s broken, that she’ll never be able to have a normal relationship again—that she can’t handle being an Alpha’s mate. When an evil linked to his past threatens to tear them apart and destroy the city, she must set her fears aside and find the courage to follow her heart—and the wolf who’s already won it.

Review:

We’ve been waiting for this book for a long time now, ever since the fall of New Orleans and our introduction to the male that keeps everyone safe and the city from crumbling.  King is one off the best characters in this entire series and we have been rooting for him to get an HEA for a long time now and I was so glad to see him finally find a way to bring his mate into his life and make her understand how much they needed one another.  Aurora doesn’t trust herself with men, ever since she allows a male to lead her into a trap that cost her years of her life and almost meant her death and her sister’s.  But now that she is in NOLA, helping King maintain order and bring the city back from the brink she is finding her self-confidence again and knows she is almost ready to acknowledge what she has known all along.  When a terrible evil from King’s past comes back to try to annihilate the man she has come to love and need more than anything, Auroras knows she can no longer deny the truth and determined she will do anything to keep King safe, even travel with him into the most dangerous situations and risk her life.  Can they trust their newfound relationship and the people returning to King’s life in order to defeat their enemy or will King’s life be forfeit before they even have a chance to explore their new love? I loved every moment of this fast-paced and exhilarating story.  King was a male who would risk it all for not only the woman he loves but all the people that depend on him for protection, asking him a true alpha and one to be admired.  I enjoyed seeing him find out more about his past and learning about his heritage alongside him.  His sweetness and determination to protect Aurora showed how much he treasures his mate and knows that his love for her are a strength for him, not a  weakness like some might assume.  Aurora was a kick-ass alpha female and seeing her find that confidence and step up was awesome! She has always been a fighter, but watching her come back to that realization made the battles they faced worth the pain and fear.  I shed many a tear as these two dealt with their bumpy road to love, but in the end there is nothing that can truly defeat two people giving their wall for love and the protection of those under their care.  I am looking forward to the next story in the series and seeing more of King and Aurora as they settle into their mating for sure.  As always Katie Reus amazes me with her imagination and flair for the dramatic without making the story seem too much.  A Masterpiece as usual.

Review:

I can honestly say I am not always the biggest fan of anthologies, but this one had some nice tie-ins and the thrill in each on was fascinating.  Each of the stories was written by a different author but the thread that pulled them all together was the school that the Heroine’s attended where they formed friendships and dealt with terrifying experiences each in their own way.  I enjoyed each of the stories, though I wish they’d had a bit more of the romance angle in them.  Each lady met their knight in their story and they found love, but the focus was definitely on the suspense and defeating the bad guy.  My favorite by far was Erin and Rafe’s story, but I enjoyed each of them for their individual stories as well as how they all tied in to one another.  I love anything written by Alexandra Ivy of course which is why I grabbed this anthology up and look forward to more of her suspense novels for sure.  If you are looking for something to give you a little thrill on a dark stormy night you can’t go wrong with these short stories.

ARC Review: Broken (Powertools: The Shields #4)

Broken (Powertools: The Shields #4)

by Jayne Rylon

Blurb:

Geeky tech girls aren’t supposed to have this much fun with their super spy co-workers.

Ruby typically supports a team of do-gooder assassins from the safety of her supercomputer in their command center. She’s dragged into danger when hackers attack her, empty millions from her crypto wallet, and threaten the global economy by tampering with blockchain technology.

Worse, her attraction to two of the agents she works with—Ace and Liam—is a distraction none of them can afford, especially when she winds up sharing a bed with them for her own safety.

They’ve got issues of their own. Ace barely returned to active duty after a grievous injury that wrecked his arm and nearly ended his career. His wounds fractured more than bones, shaking Liam’s confidence and willingness to deepen their partnership both on and off duty because they risk their lives daily to protect others. And that’s before they admit that they’re falling for the same nerdy-yet-adorable woman, who should also be strictly off-limits.

Can Ruby fix what’s broken between the three of them before the hackers end her career and her life?

Themes:  Erotica, Polyamory

Review:

I have waited so long now for Ruby to finally get the chance to find love with some sexy alpha males that I was afraid her story would be anticlimactic, but oh boy I can say for sure that did not happen.  Once again Jayne puts her lovers through the ringer both physically and emotionally before she lets them have their HEA and we get to come along for the ride. This story picks up directly where the previous one ended, actually overlapping a tiny bit, but if you haven’t read other novels in the series you won’t be lost so fear not.  Ruby is the tech-savvy nerd that runs the command center of the Shields team and she spends her free time lusting after her sexy next-door neighbors, Ace and Liam.  Ace and Liam are partners in the field, best friends, and occasionally more than that in the privacy of their apartment but in public that side of their relationship is never shared with the team.  Ruby’s biggest flaw is her curiosity, both on her computer and in her real life, but she only allows herself to dig into that curiosity when she is in the virtual world.  When she is digging into a strange coding anomaly her world suddenly implodes as a cyber-attacker puts her and the shield team on red alert and her in the sights of a very dangerous enemy.  Now Liam and Ace are determined to keep her safe, but having her as their responsibility also means having her in their arms and soon their time together heats up and secrets begin to come out about their personal relationship.  Ace has wanted his best friend for years and recently his feelings for Ruby have become more as well, but Liam has never let them become more than casual sex and Ace is terrified of approaching Ruby for anything.  Liam has wanted both Ruby and Ace for a long time, but his fears of losing anyone he loves keeps him from connecting or allowing himself to feel more for them, even as he allows himself to give into the blazing chemistry between the three of them.  But when their enemy gets an opening, putting Ruby in real danger, the trust between the three of them is the only thing that will allow them to save Ruby and bring her back to them safely.  And even if she does return, can they overcome their fears and find a way to have the relationship they all want and the same love that the others in their team have found in their triads?

Wow there were a lot of issues that Ruby, Ace, and Liam had to work through individually and together in order to find a chance to have a healthy and happy relationship.  Ruby has never allowed herself to really live in the physical world; her differences and nerdiness leaving her too self-conscious and making her feel separate from her peers. She is inexperienced despite her desires and, though she has wanted both Liam and Ace from the first time she laid eyes on them, she has no idea how to reach for what she wants in reality. Ruby was a real sweetheart, with a sassiness and facetious nature that complimented her curiosity for life, making her the perfect third for Liam and Ace.  Ace is an alpha but also a sweetheart who feels his emotions deeply and his most recent injury sidelining him from frontline work has really messed with his head, leaving him concerned about his ability to protect those he cares about and his skills.  With some help from one of Ruby’s old friends—who readers might recognize if you are fans of the Rylon series, Men in Blue—Ace is able to regain a lot of his confidence, reminding him that he is a badass and if someone doesn’t show him the respect and love he deserves he needs to demand it from them. His relationship with Liam has been complicated from the beginning, but when Ruby joins their triad, that fire melts them down and reforms them into something even stronger and more unbreakable.  Ace’s accommodating and often irreverent view of life hides a lot of insecurity, but his gentleness with Ruby and willingness to go above and beyond to meet her emotional needs showed us that he would do anything to be the man he needed for her, even though he’s been hurt repeatedly by his lover. Liam is the kind of strong and dominate personality that takes on the care and protection of those he loves, even as he is terrified of letting them down.  Those fears caused him to push Ace away and deny the bond between them, even as Ruby calls them out of the truth of their association, and creates tension that both enhances the passion and causes strife between the three of them.  With the leadership of another of Ruby’s friends, Liam learns that his natural state can lead to amazing relationships and that only by embracing that part of this nature fully will he ever really be the man he needs for himself and his lovers.  I enjoyed seeing him finally come to the conclusion that hiding from himself and his feelings was not the best way to live and releasing his fears so he could claim the two people that had stolen his heart.

This story is one that will have your heart breaking again and again and the pain that these lovers inflict on one another and have inflicted on them, caused me to wonder if they would be able to heal.  I loved the way Rylon brought in older series characters, pulling in Ruby’s old friends and allowing them to assist Ruby and her lovers in finding a way into love, and I can tell you I will be running right out to read that series (which I sadly missed) so that I can experience the full greatness of JRad and Lucas.  Ruby is a sassy badass chick that finally learns the importance of standing up for herself and what she wants from life in order to get her men in her life and her bed, as well as showing her skills as a badass techno-wiz. Ace gets the healing advice he needs to be able to pick himself up by the bootstraps and heal the mental injury that came with the physical one he suffered which has mostly healed already. The pain he has been dealing with, emotionally and mentally, takes him some time but the love he gets from Ruby right away is the impetus he needs to push for what he wants and needs from Liam too.  Liam is an ass in the beginning, just gotta say it,  but he’s a sexy ass and when he finally pulls his head out of said sexy ass he becomes the perfect alpha Dom for his two lovers and we can tell right away that his fears have been the only thing holding him back.  The passion between these three has been simmering from the first time they met, even if they denied and joked about it while two of them carried on physically, and once they all finally fell into the fire it consumed them quickly and they came out the other side changed for the better.  As usual Rylon treats us to a bit of info about the next story in the final chapter to drive us insane until that one is in our hands and I can tell you based on what we can already see coming its will be a crazy hot one.  Jayne once again sends us high with Broken characters putting each other back together and finding a way to build a triad relationship that will stand the test of time; the bar just gets higher and the next book might leave ME broken at the end!

ARC Mini-Review: Dark Alpha's Passion (Reaper #14)

Dark Alpha's Passion (Reaper #14)

by Donna Grant

Blurb:

There is no escaping a Reaper. They are elite assassins, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says a Fae’s time is up, they are who she sends…

The Fae Others think they have me in their grip, but little do they know that I’m working as a double agent. My alliance now lies with the Reapers and Death, and it is my mission and duty to destroy the malignant organization before their rot spreads. Unfortunately, a surprise splits my focus—a more than welcome one. I never thought to reunite with my lost true love. And now that I have, I must find a way to shelter her from the evil Six and convince my new friends that she’s not a threat. Admittedly, there is some doubt. How can there not be? But I trust her. And I haven’t seen her, held her, kissed her for centuries. I loved her then, will love her always, and will do whatever it takes to keep her by my side for as long as we have. Her cunning and courage hold me captive, and our passion knows no bounds. If only the timing were better—and the world safer.

Review:

The Reapers are back and with their newest ally they have the fight of their lives of their hands.  The battles for these Fae and their leader Erith, aka Death, just continue to intensify as the power-hungry Fae Others try to take over not just all of the Fae but the entire world and the only thing standing between that fate currently is the Reapers.  Their most unlikely ally is the Ruarc who was forced into the service of the Others when they threatened the family he has always been responsible for and despite the friendship he formed with one of the Reapers he knows his days are numbers.  Donna Grant has a way of breaking her readers' hearts, bringing us to tears, and then allowing her lovers an HEA that reminds us why we love her writing so much.   I have enjoyed every one of these stories, even as they have crossover with the Dragon Kings and the plots have gotten more and more complicated, but I can honestly say this one was one of my favorites and had me in tears the longest.  Ruarc is doing all he can to stay alive and keep his family safe when he is approached to be essentially a double agent, but then to make his life even more complicated and deadly his lost true love comes back into his life unexpectedly. With everything on the line he knows he has to trust the Reapers in order to survive and keep all those he loves alive, but can he trust all those around him or will the most unexpected betrayal be the end of them all?  Ok so before I share some opinions I will just say that when you read this story make sure you have tissues (or in my case a hanky) handy because boy you’re going to need something for all the tears.  Ruarc has had a lot of shit handed to him in his life, bad choices he had to make, and responsibilities that split his alliances, but through all that he maintained his goodness and the love he carried for his woman and his family.  I loved seeing him stepping up and giving his trust to not only the Reapers despite his fears, but also to the woman that owns his heart, because truly where is love without ultimate trust.  Chevonne was his everything but he gave her up for what he thought was a good reason and when she pushes her way back into his life, despite the danger it puts her in, he gives his trust even when others doubt her.  Chevonne was a great character who had to go through a LOT in this novel, my heart truly went out to her and I cried so much for her, but I loved how she loved unconditionally and stood up for those she loved against even the most terrifying of enemies.  Their love story was a terrifying roller coaster with a lot of flips and stomach dropping heights, but in the end they found their way into one another’s arms and their faith in one another was rewarded.  I love that Grant gives us an HEA even if she forces her lovers to deal with a lot in the course of their relationship.  Grant never lets me down and Passion will go down on the shelves as one of my favorite of this series for sure, but I am dying for more and cannot wait to see what comes of a few more very important characters and the folks that earn their love.
