Review: Rogue Wolf (SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team #12)

Rogue Wolf (SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team #12)

by Paige Tyler

Blurb:

There's been a wicked attraction between SWAT werewolf Trey Duncan and medical examiner Samantha Mills since the two met, but Trey's never worked up the nerve to ask her out. So when Samantha says she wants to cash in the favor Trey owes her for a date, it seems like the perfect time to confess his true feelings. But the trouble with wolves is that they're never far from danger, and this time Trey is going up against a monster the likes of which his Dallas SWAT team has never seen... This time it's going to take everything Trey and Samantha have to crack the case and protect each other.

Review:

The SWAT wolves are back in a big way and I can honestly say that this series just gets better and better. Paige Tyler has a wicked way with her wolves and her skill with bringing in surprises and weaving plots is nothing short of demonic.  I have followed this series from the very beginning and watched each of these wolves find love in a world that would certainly persecute them if they were ever discovered, despite the fact they put their lives in the line of fire over and over again to keep our lives safe.  I have been dying for Trey and Samantha’s book since they first clapped eyes on one another and we saw the connection begin to blossom between them, because everyone around them knew that they were obviously going to be meant for one another. Trey has a lot of issues in his past, but the enticing and alluring Samantha Mills is the one thing he wants more than anything, but he can’t seem to untie his tongue and get his paw out of his mouth around her.  Samantha knows there is something special about the Dallas SWAT team and she isn’t above using her position as medical examiner to figure out the mystery, but when Trey finally works up the nerve and asks her out the connection between them and the depth of it surprises Samantha.  Samantha is torn between protecting the secret of the man she is quickly falling for and doing what she feels is her duty, until the truly dangerous enemies after them make the choice for her.  With a serial killer on the loose and something stalking the citizens of Dallas, SWAT is the only thing standing between evil and the innocent and Samantha will do everything in her power to help, even if it puts her right into the line of fire.  Samantha was a strong and sassy female lead and I loved watching her come to terms with the fact that some things are more important than learning facts.  As she fell in love with Trey, her compassion and kindness are exactly what he needs to work through his problems. Trey was not your typical Alpha wolf, instead being a bit shy with Samantha and not nearly as confident as many of his fellow wolves, he also has serious PTSD that comes through in sad and heartbreaking moments as they begin their relationship.  I loved the passion between these two, the slow burn and the way the trust has to build between them before they can really build the connection they need.  This story went to some very surprising and intriguing directions including pulling in characters from the STAT story line which often parallels this one and I loved that crossover.  Tyler manages to keep not only her stories but her characters and their individual connections fresh with each new addition to this series and I cannot wait for the next bit of magic.

HOT Storm (Hostile Operations Team - Strike Team 2 #4)

by Lynn Raye Harris

Blurb:

She changed her name. Her look. Her location. But what if running away isn’t enough to save her?

Physical therapist Scarlett Reed is looking for a fresh start when she takes a job in another state. Her rules are simple: don’t get close to anyone, and flee at the first sign of danger.

Wounded soldier Malcolm McCoy plans to work hard in rehab so he can get back to saving the world. He isn’t looking for a relationship, but something about prickly Scarlett intrigues him more than it should.

When she needs a place to stay, Mal offers her the apartment over his garage—and finds it nearly impossible to keep his hands off his sassy, sexy neighbor. Scarlett knows she shouldn’t get involved, but a little friends with benefits action can’t hurt.

Or can it? Someone in Scarlett’s past circles closer, waiting for a chance to strike. Mal will do whatever it takes to protect her—but it might not be enough to survive what’s coming…

As soon as they think they’ve weathered the storm, they’ll discover it’s only beginning.

Review:

Finally Mal gets his story and what a doozy it was! Mal’s story has been a long time coming, one that we knew was going to be amazing and heartbreaking all at once, but I enjoyed every single moment of it.  This series has evolved and become one that cane always grab your heart and mind and not only make you wonder what will happen next but also remind you just how important love and life truly is, so much more important than the day-to-day mundane worries that we give priority in life these days. I have been a huge fan of this series since the very beginning and enjoy the spin-offs, sub stories and the overall plot as it has changed and become a huge family. Lynn has a way off dragging her heroes and heroines through hell before she gives them their HEA, obviously a proponent of the old adage—“the strongest blades are forged in the hottest fires”.  I am really dying to find out who loses their heart next and gets into trouble with their love story, but I know that whoever Ms. Harris choses to torture will end up being blissfully happy in the end.

Mal is recovering from a life-threatening injury, one that could have derailed his career with HOT, but one that he took in order to protect his buddy—who just also happens to be the man the woman he loves is engaged to.  Life has never been more complicated for him, but he knows that he needs to put in the works to get himself better and back to his team.  When he meets his new enigmatic and sassy physical therapist he likes her instantly and he is determined to be a friend to her when he sees just out of sorts she seems to be.  Scarlett is trying to settle into her new job and her new skin when she meets the sexiest and most dangerous—to her heart and her future—man she has ever come across.  She knows that she shouldn’t let herself grow attached to Mal, but the more she gets to know the grumpy soldier the harder he is to resist.  When she is suddenly in need of a new place to stay, Mal offers his “guest house” and she knows she won’t come across a better option, even though the danger to her mind and heart is higher.  Soon they are sending a lot more time together and their relationship is developing into something more than just friends, even if they both want to deny it. But when strange things start to happen, Scarlett fears her past has caught up with her, and if she is right, her life and Mal’s might be in much more danger than either could ever imagine.

Mal is the perfect tragic hero, one that steals your heart as he sacrifices himself to save his buddy, despite the fact he is in love with his buddy’s girl, but when you god below that surface you start to see that he is a little bit of a dufus when it comes to really understanding himself.  He has been pining for the girl he couldn’t have for a long time, instead of just working through his emotions and finding the truth, that he was envious of their love and connection and wanted something similar for himself.  I loved seeing his playful and sweet side as he pulled Scarlett out of her shell and brought her back to herself in so many ways.  He is, as always, a kick-butt operator that is willing to do anything to protect his friends and the woman he loves, but honestly I liked him the most in the moments when it was just him and Scarlett snuggling and talking out their problems.  I also enjoyed seeing him appreciate the sass and sarcasm that Scarlett threw at him, because let’s be honest, most people, especially men, just don’t appreciate that trait. Scarlett has had some serious crap thrown her way, but she found a way to cope and escape the trauma of her past.  While she plans to live a quiet life to protect herself and those around her, she feels the instant connection to the grumpy soldier and doesn’t fight their friendship too hard.  I enjoyed learning about Scarlett’s past, seeing how much she has overcome, and even though I cried my heart out, watching her overcome so much more; she truly is the kind of woman I want to be when I finally grow up.  She inner strength and beauty shines more brightly than any fire that she was forced to crawl through to reach the end of her danger and be in Mal’s arms in the end.  Her ability to still trust in Mal and the HOT guys, despite her past and the strikes against them, was amazing and it was heart wrenching watching her holding on for their help.  I loved the way she persevered and refused to allow the bastard stalking her to win, no matter what sick and sadistic trauma he put her through.  She really was one of my favorite heroines in the storyline so far.

I so very much enjoyed reading HOT Storm, every moment was packed with laughter, tears, and love, sometimes all at once, and the emotional roller coaster ride that these two put themselves through as they fell in love was a wild ride to be sure. Mal had some emotional growing he needed to do in this story before he could accept the love that grew so quickly between him and Scarlett, but I enjoyed watching him experience it and finding a way to not only let go of something that was never his to begin with, but learning that sometimes the best things in our lives are right in front of us.  Scarlett went through a lot in a short period of time, but she was stronger for the experiences and will always have that past to strengthen her as she moves forward in her new and thrilling life with the man she loves and who helped her finally find her freedom and happiness. The passion between these two was interesting from the very beginning, both of them feeling an immediate connection and denying it, one because they were in love with another and the other because they’d given up on love.  But once the friendship developed, offering comfort and safety along with the heat, Mal and Scarlett felt safe enough to give into their needs and the fire between them was irresistible to witness I can honestly say this was one of my favorite (only surpassed by the Col’s story really) in the series, mostly due to the fact that we finally had time to watch emotions develop and a deeper connection, not wrought of intensity and life or death, had time to come to fruition.  I cannot wait for the next in the series, though in the meantime I am more than thrilled that Ian Black, the crazy sexy cohort of the HOT guys will be getting his own story (Black Heart).  Lynn never ceases to amaze and overwhelm me with her imagination, writing, and heart as she gives us her all in her stories.

Review: Bombshell (Hell's Belles #1)

Bombshell (Hell's Belles #1)

by Sarah MacLean

Blurb:

After years of living as London’s brightest scandal, Lady Sesily Talbot has embraced the reputation and the freedom that comes with the title. No one looks twice when she lures a gentleman into the dark gardens beyond a Mayfair ballroom…and no one realizes those trysts are not what they seem.

No one, that is, but Caleb Calhoun, who has spent years trying not to notice his best friend’s beautiful, brash, brilliant sister. If you ask him, he’s been a saint about it, considering the way she looks at him…and the way she talks to him…and the way she’d felt in his arms during their one ill-advised kiss.

Except someone has to keep Sesily from tumbling into trouble during her dangerous late-night escapades, and maybe close proximity is exactly what Caleb needs to get this infuriating, outrageous woman out of his system. But now Caleb is the one in trouble, because he’s fast realizing that Sesily isn’t for forgetting…she’s forever. And forever isn’t something he can risk.

Review:

The spin-off series we have all been pining for is finally here as Sarah MacLean gives us the long-awaited story of Lady Sesily Talbot and the love of her life American Caleb Calhoun.  If anyone has read previous series by Sarah Maclean you will be familiar with these characters (though if not you might lose a bit of the overall beautiful effect of the story but not much) and have been dying to see them finally get their HEA like the rest of us.  Sarah Maclean has the beautiful talent of creating strong, sassy and believable historical heroines that leave you wondering just how much of history is wrong about the females of the past and  wishing that we could truly go back and find out if some of these women existed.  Sesily once thought she was going to find love with Caleb but when he returned to America leaving her heart broken she decided that instead of having any man in her life she would dedicate her life to a greater cause. Caleb returned to America when he knew that the desire he felt for Sesily was becoming too much to resist but he left his heart with her, so returning and finding her putting herself into dangerous situations means he has to protect her.  As these two spark off one another and find a way to coexist, they slowly begin to see that life together would be much more fulfilling that life apart, if only the dangers stalking them would let them be.  I love the sexy and sassy romance between these two and the way that Sesily is portrayed as not only the hero of her own life but Caleb’s hero as well.  Caleb was a strong and protective alpha male, but he slowly began to understand that Sesily truly could take care of herself and he gave her the freedom she needed and instead stood at her back.  Sesily was a brave, determined, and brilliant heroine, truly a woman well before her time and I loved getting to know her.  The passion between these two was amazing and I loved watching them light the fire once they finally began to accept that there was no fighting it.  I am dying to find out what comes next for Sesily and her friends and see who falls under love’s spell next. Sarah has struck gold once again with her Belles.

Review:

So once again I come to the hard question of whether I actually enjoy Ms. London’s Contemporary writing, which in the past was such a difficult question to answer that I almost past on this novel, but I’m glad I didn’t for once.  While I can say that I didn’t love it nearly as much as I do her historical work, this second installment in the Lucky Dog series was much more enjoyable to me than previous contemporary novels in the recent past for sure.  It took me a long while to make the connection to the first novel, mainly because it’s been a while and I didn’t love the first one enough for it to stick, but there is a connection and it’s interesting.   The story begins with a meet-cute between Harper and Jonah in a ride share when they are both on their way out of town for Christmas, which leaves them in possession of one another’s phone.  Harper is an extremely driven, uptight and overall odd character, making her a tricky to like in the beginning, but she has her moments and her odd sense of humor make Jonah laugh and lightens his heavy load.  Jonah is dealing with the heavy burden of managing his family business as his father recovers from a health scare, but the health of the business is its own scary proposition.  As Jonah and Harper chat through the holidays they begin to really like one another and decide to try getting to know one another when they switch back phones in person, but they both also have a lot going on professionally.  And when Harper’s professional future and Jonah’s begin to clash things between them become tense and a decision between personal connection and professional competition has to be made.  Some say competition can make a relationship more intense, but at some point I think both Harper and Jonah began to see that there wasn’t much worth for competing for, and instead they needed to band together to build the life they wanted together.

I really enjoyed this story much more than the first in the series, but there were a few things that made it less enjoyable for me.  I really didn’t like Harper’s boss and through most of the story her coworkers either, even if that was the intention to make her learn her lesson and move on with life.  Some of the other side characters, namely Jonah’s family and friends and, of course, the canine characters were much more enjoyable to read about, so they carried many of the scenes when Jonah and Harper were being idiots.  Harper was a woman that needed to find a way to experience a new way of living and let go of a lot so that she could find a happier life.  Having life goals is one thing, but she was really letting life pass her by until Jonah finally got her to start living it. I loved seeing her find a backbone and standup for herself with her boss and move on with her life in order to have Jonah.  Jonah is just the opposite, always giving so much of himself to others that he’s lost himself and I think meeting Harper was just what he needed to remind him that there can and needs to be a balance in your life in order to find happiness.  He was a perfect guy once her stopped martyring himself and accepted that sometimes being selfish is the best thing for everyone involved.  The love that developed between Harper and Jonah and sweet and came at just the right time for them both, giving them someone in their corner that they both needed.  I am looking forward much more to seeing where the series goes next and what type of canine craziness will be coming next. While the story didn’t blow me out of the water like some of Ms. London’s historical works, it was charming, engaging, and overall a satisfying read.

Review:

An all new paranormal series begins by one of my favorite authors, a series filled with Magic, danger and the connection between mates that is undeniable. For those of us that are fans of other Carrie Ann Ryan PNR series, you might be going into this one with a few expectations, but let me tell you now, LEAVE THEM BEHIND.  Yes the series has shifters, yes there are witches, but other than that this world is unique and truly a world all it’s own.  Sage Reed is heading to Ravenwood to see her Aunt, determined to make the small town into her new home, despite the rumors of magic that she’s heard about the town all her life.  Just as she arrives a hellacious storm hits the town and she finds herself stranded on the side of the road, with no way to get into town, but then the world begins to get even stranger.  Rome Baker has no idea that the sexy witch that just saved his life is the niece of one of the witches in town, all he knows is that he feels and instant connection to her and he won’t let her get away.  As Sage learns more and more about her destiny and the powers that she has been denying her whole life, which are now becoming uncontrollable, she needs to lean on the sexy Bear-shifter as her touchstone.  Together with their friends and family, Sage and Rome have to defeat and evil that is back to try to take over their town, but like all evils, the darkness can easily seep into the cracks in the town’s foundations and surprising villains are uncovered.  In the end, their love must hold against tragedy, deadly foes, and the long-foretold darkness that is coming for the town of Ravenswood, if Sage and Rome or any of their friends want a chance at an HEA.  OMFG how to describe how much I loved this story?! Sage was the quintessential newbie witch, learning to trust not just her powers but her own strength as a woman, as she discovered more and more about herself.  As tragedy after tragedy struck their crew, Sage found a way to not only strand strong, but to prove her worth and fight back for those she loved.  She was sweet and loving with her family and Rome, intelligent and brave as she found her place in the town, and refused to give up when her enemies tried to tear her down. I also loved how committed she instantly was to protecting a town she’d never even seen and to the people that instantly stole her heart, despite her beginning disbelief in magic.  Rome was the sexiest bear-shifter and also one of the best male leads I’ve read in a while.  Yes he was strong and alpha, but he also showed vulnerability enough that he wasn’t unattainable or devoid of lovability.  Dealing with his own issues within his pack didn’t prevent him from stepping up and wooing his mate, helping her find her path, and protecting the town as a whole when he could easily have left them to their own devices.  I will say I cried a hell of a lot in this story but I am coming to understand that Carrie Ann likes to make her readers ball their eyes out at least twice in each story just for grins and giggles before she gives the couples the happy ending they deserve.  The fire and passion between these two is there from the beginning and despite all that is thrown at them their feelings and fire never seems to waver, even when it doesn’t make a lot of sense to either of them.  I am positively DYING for the rest of this series and to see Sage’s sister witches find their Happy and of them to ultimately kick evil bad guy ass together.  Another all new world of magic and mayhem that instantly drew me in and hasn’t let me go yet.
